For those who don't know, to speak in tongues is "the vocalizing of fluent speech-like, but unintelligible utterances, often as part of religious practice. The language of angels."

Heres a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZbQBajYnEc

What are your thoughts? Bollucks? Or is it the closet way to speak to the Lord?

ps Sorry for no poll, glitchspot won't let me :[

For every 5 Christians who see Christian ethics as the way to be closer to God, there are 5 mystics who think they can babble their way to a better afterlife. It's this second group which I think is giving Christianity a bad reputation.

It's an endless form of entertainment. I can't help but laugh my ass off when I see that kind of behaviour. Likewise for the faith healing and convulsions in the aisles as if there's some kind of mighty anointing. It's comedic gold.

The vast majority of times it's ever used I believe it's fake... and this is coming from a Christian. Whether it can be done in these days or not, I do not know. Here is more about it if you'd like to find out different positions on the subject.

I went to an NC church a while back, and the community have a strong belief in the whole "speaking in tongue" thing. It's poppycock to me.

But I will say through anger, I've ended up making my own kind of language. Maybe it's just a way to keep myself from cursing out loud, but it's a helluva weird thing to do.

It's pretty funny to me. I don't think it's real in anyway, but it is some good entertainment.

Like anything that makes religion out to be some sort of supernatual revelation, it's just a lie. I mean, really...

All it does is cater to people whose understanding of religion is grounded in external, worldly authority.

Absolute "bollucks", as you put it. Some people are so desperate to find meaning where there is none, to the point where they will do anything to fabricate meaning out of nothing. It's quite pathetic, but that is Humanity for you.

I read alot of supernatural/ufo stuff and the whole speaking in tongue thing is generally the most researched and disproven/explained in a logical way. Now if we can only find out what REALLY happened in Roswell...

It can be an awesome thing.. that is, IF it's interpreted!

If it's not interpreted... then it's pointless and doesn't do anything for anyone! So, it's only a good thing, if it's done right! ;)

Utter gibberish used to manipulate the feelble-minded.

When people are dumb and looking for answers, they'll believe anything and give them $$$.

Seeing people speak in tongues creeps me out...and makes me smirk a little. I went to Casey Treat's church here in Washington, USA and had a discussion with a minister backstage...he basically was trying to pray over me and get me to speak in tongues, and I told him in a diplomatic way that he was full of it. He then told me that Satan still had a hold on me... :| I went because a cute girl I knew invited me. The stupid things we do for love interests.

It is what it is... unintelligible babbling that makes people look like fools.

What would be really impressive is someone babbling in a long-dead language that allows scholars to translate text like Linear A.

haha thats hilarious. Thats the reason I posted this topic. I dug this girl so we went to church (keep in mind, I have no religion, but she was hawt). Everyone started speaking in tongues and out of no where she started. I laughed thinking she was joking with me. Turns out she wasnt.

When I was a Christian, all I thought it was is a lazy prayer. People cbf to think of stuff to say so they just speak gibberish. I also think that amongst the charismatic christian community, it's encouraged way to much -- and not viewed with any skepticism. I once saw a 19 year old say the following things in "tongues": "nanananananananananananananana" ^ Nobody said anything like: Wtf are you saying? How anyone could think that has some spiritual significance or truth just amazes me. I'm still open to the idea of using a method of communication with God that transcends language, but until I experience it myself -- I don't believe it.

Bullocks.

Even though I don't know the exact definition of that word.

wado-karate

I believe the standard Britist to American translation of "bullocks" is "Bull****" Which is exactly what speaking in tounges is
