Reports are coming in from Nikki Finke and her new man-about-NYC Mike Fleming atDeadlinethatSpider-Man 4, as we know it now, is dead in the water. The studio (Sony) has apparently decided to scrap the project and look forward to a potential franchise reboot after directorSamRaimipulled out of the project, citing that he would not be able to meet the film's summer release date and maintain the film's creative integrity.

This means that bothSam Raimiand starTobey Maguireare out.

Instead, Fleming reports that "the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast." Sony will now look to someone new to guide theSpideyfranchise, but no word yet as to who that might be. Raimi will move on to one of the many projects he has lined up, including possiblyWorld of Warcraft.

This comes as a great surprise to everyone off theSonylot, as we've been talking aboutSpider-Man 4for quite some time. But in recent weeks, the production has hit more than one bump in the road. There were talks of script problems, conflicting reports about villains and other creative quarrels inside the production. Actors were in talks, but awaiting a script. New writers were brought on, then discarded. Now it seems more than likely that these problems built to a boiling point, causing Sam Raimi to decide that he needed more time. And Sony didn't want to give him that time.

An interesting road lies ahead, as the studio clearly wants to continue makingSpider-Manmovies. But without Raimi, they could take on an entirely different tone. We in the press will spend the next several years (I'm sure) speculating as to what that tone will be. Should make for an interesting journey…

Despite the news that Malkovich will play The Vulture, it is being reported that Spider-Man 4 is done. Apparently, a reboot is planned.

There is something that tells me that a reboot isn't a great idea... :?

Sounds good. I didn't like the Spiderman trilogy very much, so hopefully they do it right this time around.

I would love to see another director give a spider man movie a chance since I hate the first 3, and I don't know what reboot is so w/e. I'm also hoping sipder man will stay dead until they restart the series a decade from now or something.

They had better not have the reboot be about the origin story.

I thought the first 2 were fine for stand alone movies. They captured most of the Spiderman essences. They really just should have stopped there, since the story was pretty much over.

Idk I liked the actor who played the green goblin in the frist movie but thats pretty much it, I hated all other character in the franchise. To me it just did not feel like spider man to me.

I would love to see a take on the Ultimate Spider-Man series, or, you know, just keep Peter in high school for more than one entry.

Wow, a reboot...really? This soon after the franchise started? I mean it could be good, I guess...but I'm not very interested in a Raimi-less Spider-Man unless they find someone who loves the character as much as he does.

Hopefully they go the Incredible Hulk route and just skip over the origins in the opening credits. We don't really need to go through the BS with him getting his powers all over again.

So everyone can forget the mess that was Spider-Man 3. That film pretty much killed the current series stone dead.

1 and 2 were good movies. 3 was not.

4 could have been the approach needed to revitalize the series with Tobey and the other leads. As it stands now, I would say that this is a poor decision on Sony's part.

It would be the equivalent to DC not wanting to make a 3rd Batman with Christopher Nolan and just deciding to make another origin of Batman movie with new actors.

In a word: Very Risky.

People like these actors, directors and movies (with the exception of Spider-Man 3 once again), and messing with them and creating something new after the series has been proved successful seems like an incredibly poor decision.

Give it some time Sony. If you really wanna redo Spider-Man, you better give it at least a few more years. Let people forget about the old ones for a while then go back and reinvent it. If you do it now, and it sucks, people will react poorly and profit will go with it.

There are a ton of X-Men movies in pre-production, we don't need one more X-Men film to be released.

This is bad news. As boring Spider-Man 3 was, that wasn't the death knell for the series. It could've redeemed itself. I'm surprised to see some hatred for all of the Spider-Man movies. It seems like the cycle of superhero movies is for it to have two great movies, a horrible sequel or two, and then a reboot. X-Men is next on the list.

What about the ACTUAL ONE??? Thats the one I am talking about. And X-4 will most likely include apocalypse in it.

EXACTLY. i'm with you. i love the first two, 3rd not much, i am so shocked when i read the article.. i was looking forward to part 4 to rise up again after the disaster part 3.. first superman returns follow up in trouble now this??? noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... to me upcoming new spidey movie without tobey, kirsten and sam is.. like watching it very uncomfortably because we are used to them doing the movies.. i know people have different tastes on their performances., well this is my taste and opinion.

Well considering the Spiderman movies made me dislike Spiderman, despite having previously been a fan, I'm quite happy at this news. I really thought casting Toby Maguire as Peter Parker was a beyond awful idea.

Well I'm glad they cancelled after the odds of the filmmakers falling out rather than pushing forward something that would have otherwise had a big potential of just being a pile of crap.

I don't know, this doesn't sound like such a great idea. I mean, the 1st one was great and the 2nd was even better. Sure 3 was crap but that doesn't mean they should reboot the franchise. That's usually done after a string of crappy movies like all those Batman sequels. They should've just taken the time to make sure that 4 was done right instead of trying to push it just to cash in. I've already pretty much forgotten about #3, it never even happened in my mind, but if they want to redo things, why not just redo that one. They could title it "Spider-Man 3: The Do-Over", or something.

No more Tobey Maguire? No thanks.

If these people, the same ones who accepted the utter trash that was Spiderman 3, rejected this script, then it must have been nothing short of God-awful.

Well, that series didn't last long. Why does one less-than-great film need a whole reboot? Just don't repeat the same mistakes: have one villain, and don't do weird emo dance scenes.

This news does bring me down quite a bit, as I have always been a huge fan of Spider-Man. But I guess it's time to move on, and a trilogy is just what Spider-Man is meant to be.

And I don't know if any of you are nostalgic, but there are a few great and successful films that have come out recently that are sure to spawn franchises to help us forget or relieve us of our disappointment of such news, such as Avatar, Iron Man, Batman, etc.

Though Spider-Man will never be forgotten, we can always hope and get hyped up for sequels for such films, rather than hanging on to the past and hoping for continuous installments for one franchise that started just under eight years ago.

It is way too soon for a reboot.
