Thing is, my suspicions are that there is a lot more to Kylo char than the TFA might portray. I don't really think that its going to be a straight cut "This guy is bad" and "this guy is good" angle. A twist is quite obvious. For example, its no secret that Kylo adore Darth Vader...and wishes to live up to his legacy. Yet, this is what, 30 years, after ROTJ. The whole galaxy should know by now that Vader KILLED Emperor Palpatine. Why would a Dark Side practitioner revere a figure that ultimately betrayed his own master and died a Light-sider? I bet Luke would spare no effort in clearing his father's tarnished name and reputation.

Cut story short, not forgetting whos that Snokes guy (strong indication he is Darth Plagueis, Sideous ex-master, in TFA his theme song is the SAME as Darth Plagueis in the prequels), Kylo is trying to be like Vader in ways more than simply just because Darth Vader was a badass Sith.

@Allicrombie: Possibility for sure, but unlikely I'd imagine. We'll see.

Very interesting. I now regret reading this, because this would be very unexpected and exciting.

Yeah, very compelling. I do think Luke would have cleared some stuff up. We'll see.

@ShadowsDemon: I do like that we see Ren's conflict quite early on here, we didn't see anything of Vader's "redemption' until the end of Empire at the earliest.

@Allicrombie: The writers didn't let us see it at that point, no. But I'm sure they had it all mapped out.

I can see your reasoning but Snokes can't be Darth Plagueis. Darth Sidious/Palpating snuffed him out. There can only be 2 Sith(1 master/1 apprentice) so when it was Palpatine/Vader that meant plagueis had to be murdered.

So far from what we've seen in TFA I'm not at all impressed with Kylo Ren as a villain. He's more like a moody teenager so unless Supreme Leader Snoke really turns out to be a complete evil badass or Kylo Ren stops being so freaking emo we're going to be left wanting a real evil guy.

@fenriz275: He's not nearly as bad as Anakin from the prequels.

Kylo Ren losing to Rey is a bit unbelievable. If he is 29, and she is 19, and Kylo has made it his life mission to hunt and kill Jedi, and we know he is responsible for wiping out Luke's jedi temple... well, I just had a hard time believing it.

Rey being good with a staff would not in the least contribute to skill with a lightsaber, especially in a situation with non-existent preparation.

We also know Plagueis mastery of the Force was such that he can bring people back to life and perhaps Palpatine underestimated how powerful his previous master was that he thought he killed him for good.

Thats the thing, see. There will always be 2 Siths...so if Palpatine and Vader were the last ones, then how did this Snokes guy became a Sith? He looked positively ancient for sure, he looked like he'd been a Sith for a very long time. He couldn't have come after Sidious and Vader, he could only have been before those two. Thats why I felt and a few others, that Snokes is actually Plagueis.

Kylo Ren is a big puss. Also it just hit me, I remember him force stopping a laser beam in mid air and kept it there for awhile at the beginning of the movie. Why couldn't he do the same thing when Chewie shot at him. I can't believe they made the child of strong parents, strong characters like Han and Leia, such a wuss that throws tantrums every time something didn't go his way lol. In the next films, I hope he gets cut in half, vertically.

He also gets beaten in a light saber fight against that Finn dude who literally had NO experience with light sabers.

It's the same with most brain-dead action movies - character's powers and abilities change to fit the narrative.

Kylo Ren reminds me of Zuko, from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

This is a pretty good comparison actually, I like it. Although as I said I don't think Kylo will end up getting redeemed. My personal theory is he will end up killing Snoke in the next movie and will end up being the main evil...of course that's based on absolutely nothing ;)

That sounds more like Kefka from Final Fantasy VI.

I have to disagree. There is a lot of things about Ren that is left open to inference by the viewer. In the movie proper, we don't get much detail about his history beyond his training with Luke going sour and becoming obsessed with Vader.

There are a lot of things that *could* make him an amazing villain, but they haven't been developed or revealed yet, and unfortunately, they didn't put enough behind him in this movie to really sell him to me. I love Rey and Finn, but Ren better pull a Vader in Empire if I'm to truly fall for him as a character.

And I really wish they would have held off on the reveal of him being Han's son until their meeting at the First Order base. The shock of finding out it's Han's son as he plunges his lightsaber into his chest would have floored me more than the two events happening separately did.
