  1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $88,300,000
  2. Daddy's Home - $29,000,000
  3. The Hateful Eight - $16,240,000
  4. Sisters - $12,580,000
  5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip - $11,800,000
  6. Joy - $10,400,000
  7. The Big Short - $9,000,000
  8. Concussion - $8,000,000
  9. Point Break - $6,845,000
  10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - $4,625,000

Well OT, there was nothing new come out this week which I'm surprise. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is trying to over throne Avatar and it should be interesting to see how TFA does in China this week when it opens. [Can't wait till it beats Avatar here in the U.S., so I can see what extra money it piles on]

January 1-3 Mojo's box office

I want this to beat Avatar WW but I don't think that could happen...it's so beating it domestically though.

I guess the real question is, does any other movie have any shot at dethroning The Force Awakens from the number one spot, besides potentially Episode VIII?

Unlikely, Avatar had $2 billion foreign gross alone. It put up strangely massive numbers in several countries. So far it doesn't look like Star Wars has the same foreign draw that Avatar did. The only way for it to beat Avatar is for the domestic box office to make of the slack and take in a proportionally high number to make up the difference. Seeing Star Wars' trend it's unlikely the domestic take will be enough to do it. Star Wars will without a doubt end up with more then $2 billion, and has a legitimate shot at taking the 2nd place spot from Titanic, I can't however see it where the extra $1.2 billion needed to beat Avatar will come from.

Yep, i was one of them that showed up to watch it at the theater with 5 others. Even though i had seen it online already. I had to see it on the big screen, even if it was late.

@ferrari2001: It already destroyed titanic, and it did in 16 days what took avatar a few months? It doesn't even open to China until the 9th which is a huge market. You're delusional.

Did you grow up with the 70's movies or the late 90s trilogy?

China is the last hope(comes out on the 9th)...and even that sounds a bit far fetched.

@Archangel3371:

Yeah, I grew up with the 70's movies as well (I was 15 when I saw the original at the theatre in 1977)..... I liked this one better than A New Hope.

...but then came The Empire Strikes Back!

We are talking worldwide earnings not domestic grosses. Star Wars has not beaten Titanic. It still hasn't even beaten Jurassic World's worldwide total (although it's getting close). Titanic grossed $2,128,888,188, while Star Wars is currently sitting at $1,576,608,684. Plus it's still about $1.2 billion away from beating Avatar and only one market left to open. Even including China, no matter how you crunch the numbers it's highly unlikely it will top $2.7 billion. Unless it somehow doubles China's domestic all time record it'll fall short. It'll almost certainly land somewhere between Titanic and Avatar, pending a miracle in China.

I was just going to post a question asking how Hollywood resisted the urge to create a sequel to a $2.7 billion juggernaut, then looked up Avatar 2 and discovered it's in the works.

I should have known....

@mattbbpl: lol, yea. They've wanted to do it for a while. The amazing thing about Avatar is it made so much money overseas (72% of it's total which is nuts). I don't think Avatar 2 will make as much as the first one though. It was really the first 3d Imax movie, it was grand in scale and it was marketed like you wouldn't believe. I just don't think the second can top it. Although it'll definitely still do well.
