(Reuters) - Coffee chain Starbucks Corp has asked U.S. customers to leave their guns at home after being dragged into an increasingly fractious debate over U.S. gun rights in the wake of multiple mass shootings.

While many U.S. restaurant chains and retailers do not allow firearms on their properties, Starbucks' policy had been to default to local gun laws, including "open carry" regulations in many U.S. states that allow people to bring guns into stores.

In August, this led gun-rights advocates to hold a national "Starbucks Appreciation Day" to thank the firm for its stance, pulling the company deeper into the fierce political fight.

Locations for Starbucks Appreciation Day events included Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were shot dead in an elementary school in December. Starbucks closed that shop before the event was scheduled to begin.

Chief Executive Howard Schultz said in an open letter to customers late Tuesday that Starbucks Appreciation Day events "disingenuously portray Starbucks as a champion of 'open carry.' To be clear: we do not want these events in our stores."

The coffee chain did not, however, issue an outright ban on guns in its nearly 7,000 company-owned cafes, saying this would potentially require staff to confront armed customers.

The Seattle-based company hoped to give "responsible gun owners a chance to respect its request," Schultz said.

The CEO told Reuters the policy change was not the result of the Newtown Starbucks Appreciation Day event, which prompted the Newtown Action Alliance to call on the company to ban guns at all of its U.S. stores. Nor was it in response to the mass shootings this week at the Washington Navy Yard.

"We've seen the 'open carry' debate become increasingly uncivil and, in some cases, even threatening," Schultz wrote, noting that "some anti-gun activists have also played a role in ratcheting up the rhetoric and friction," at times soliciting and confronting employees and patrons.

"We found ourselves in a position where advocates on both sides of the issue were using Starbucks as a staging ground for their own political position," said Schultz, who in the past has willingly waded into the public debate over the U.S. national debt and gay marriage.

Schultz said more people had been bringing guns into Starbucks shops over the last six months, prompting confusion and dismay among some customers and employees.

"I'm not worried we're going to lose customers over this," he told Reuters. "I feel like I've made the best decision in the interest of our company."

Starbucks' request does not apply to authorized law enforcement personnel.

Do you think people should be allowed to bring in guns with them to restaurants and stores? Do you agree with Starbucks' request?

Maybe it's just because I live in Canada, but the concept of seeing people openly carrying guns anywhere (let alone a coffee shop) is so bizarre. The above pictures are as odd to me as seeing little kids in Africa carrying AK-47s.

I feel less safe with people openly carrying guns then the opposite.. That and you look like a jackass with a holster on wearing casual clothing.

Yup. I live in Ontario and the idea of guys casually bringing their rifles with them to Tim Hortons is surreal.

I think people are making open carry is bigger issue than it should be. There's nothing wrong with it and if the law allows it, then I don't see anything wrong with a law-abiding citizen having and owning a gun on their person. Seriously, it's not a big deal.

I look at all this recent open carry conflicts as a result of the push to increase gun laws. People on one side of the coin want to ban weapons and the others do not want their weapons banned. If you look at it objectively, the rhetoric on both sides has ramped up to what we see now. If the anti-gun side were to talk about realistic gun control and keeping weapons out of the hands of those who do not need them, that would be one thing, but to say that no one needs weapons is another and gun rights advocates are showing that responsible gun owners are able to walk amongst the public without committing crimes with the dreaded firearm is another.

WhiteKnight77

No people on one side of the coin are not asking for an all out ban on guns. That is just the type of BS the gun nut crowd keep saying even though it isn't happening.

People (such as myself) are asking for tightened up gun laws and better following through of current restrictions and in response the gun nut crowd have been organizing ridiculous protests and crying that everyone is trying to take their weapons.

I understand certain distaste with some proposals put forth as it can be argued that magazine restrictions and such aren't accomplishing anything, but the pro-gun crowd have just been acting like psychos in response. Having a bunch of people gather at a restaurant carrying weapons is just dumb.

We can't go to the table and talk about anything when one side is on another planet entirely.

And yeah, I have yet to even see a single proposal for a ban on guns. Stop spreading BS people.

Aljosa23

- If the business allows it, sure. If not then no. You don't have a right to carry your guns anywhere you may wish.

- Yes. Under the circumstances I think it's a smart move.

Like seriously...I would be scared to be in a restaurant with someone who has a gun. You don't know whats going through someone's mind at any given time. Maybe he is having a bad day, just caught his wife cheating as he was coming home from his 18hr shift and he is a bit uneasy. Who knows? All I know is I stand a better chance if he doesnt have a gun.

yes, but there are people that point to places like the UK and Australia that have gun bans as good examples of gun control.  Not understanding that it wouldn't work here

A gun looks out of place in a Starbucks anyway. I usually picture a liberal hipster with a Macbook... probably writing an anti-gun blog entry.

Maybe he is having a bad day, just caught his wife cheating as he was coming home from his 18hr shift and he is a bit uneasy. Who knows? All I know is I stand a better chance if he doesnt have a gun.

so they just get a concealed carry permit and then it's okay?

huh? when did i say that?

[QUOTE="II_Seraphim_II"] Like seriously...I would be scared to be in a restaurant with someone who has a gun. You don't know whats going through someone's mind at any given time. Maybe he is having a bad day, just caught his wife cheating as he was coming home from his 18hr shift and he is a bit uneasy. Who knows? All I know is I stand a better chance if he doesnt have a gun.II_Seraphim_II

I know, but my point that I would be afraid to be in a restaurant with someone with a gun, doesn't matter if its visible or concealed. A gun is a gun, and either way it can still kill me.

Nope, just items that were specifically designed to kill

Are you scared to be in the parking lot of that restaurant too? We know, after all, that cars are far more deadly than guns, and much more likely to kill you.

Guns were made to kill, cars were made for transport. The only reason why cars kill more people is because more people use cars than guns. And look, just cause the US believes u have a right to own a gun dont mean the rest of the world has to agree.....

And yet car accidents are one of the leading causes of death, more so than gun violence

But cars are actually useful for something other than killing people, you can't really compare the 2.
