Did you actually read the article? :P He basically says that God is the name people give to the reason why we exist, i.e., physics.
breakinglaws
What?
no it's not, its science. Chances are if god exists(and yes I believe in him) he'd be more of a scientific concept then a magical one like we love picturing him as.

Oh I didn't mean the idea, I meant Hawkings. BOOYAH!

According to the laws of thermodynamics, we at least know that he can outside operate outside the overall laws of science.

God = Physics? *does not compute*flipin_jackass
Well I can see what he's saying, really. Effectively, his message is that humans created this concept of "God" to explain their existence, and that, as such, "God" is really the name that people give to that which is responsible for their existence.
Hawking indeed never said that God didn't exist, he simply said that the field of physics is now so advanced that we don't need God anymore to justify our existence. He didn't say that there's none, he rather just said that there could be none. People have a hard time understanding some very simple things sometimes :P

While that may be true, many do associate 'God' with divine being(s). I guess he was just trying to be a bit diplomatic with that statement. The better question asked would be if he believed in divine beings or deities.[QUOTE="flipin_jackass"]God = Physics? *does not compute*GabuEx

Order suggests design in my opinion. Therefore, I believe in a God. But to each his own I guess.

If you define God as "the name people use to explain why we are here", then that's true, but for a lot of people God is the God described in the Bible, end of story. No changes will be made to their belief to conform with whatever the latest scientific theory is. Personally my view of God is that it's a conscious being, so while I believe physics is responsible for the universe and all life in it, I wouldn't call it God.Hawking is an agnostic. This isn't news. Why is it always taken as news?
PannicAtack
This, I've seen him say it many times over that you can't prove or disprove God :P
With technology and science there will always be something we dont understand. If someone 100 years ago saw an iPhone, they would think it was magic or something. 100 years from now, who knows what we will know? Maybe eventually we'll find all the answers :)
very few scientists will try to say god doesnt exist. They just know he probably doesnt.
For instance, im god. There i just said it. You cant prove me wrong with science... there is no scientific way to prove im not god. But the probability of god posting on a gamespot forum? probably pretty low, pretty damn low.

I'm sure hes said someting like this before, I don't know why people are suprised. He didn't say that he believes in god, he said that god is peoples explanation for existance, which is no different from physics.
I'd say he's got it about half right. At least, until physics explains how the human brain works. God is a term attributed to psychological processes in the human mind that give an experience of the blending of the subjective self and objective other (or at least, the "self" we believe exists inherently). An equanimity that most people can't put into words, and thus attribute it to a "divine" being. While others, who haven't actually experienced that equanimity, think God is a literally extant being and function in the religious environment off the experiences of others around them.
What is insane is people actually thinking he is insane and taking his comments WAY out of context. Human-after-all
agreed. this board gives me a headache sometimes

You'll get used to it after a while.you have to feel sorry for old Hawkings, he survived years longer than he should have and has broadened so many peoples minds, and yet he can barely state a simple view of god without people twisting his words completely.
Hmm.. I can really see his views towards it. I'd love to show this article to my friends who are really athiest and tend to use him as an example every time..
Kurezan
It's pretty clear he does not actively believe in a God. I really think he's just trying to pacify religious folks or takes a much different approach to it than your average religion.
I don't think Stephen Hawking is a Christian or Muslim.

Define order.. Because the order of the universe is nothing like how we would see order.. The universe is actually extremely chaotic.

Yeah I see what you mean. I have no problem with his views.. I just hate when people use it as there justification for their own beliefs.. and then try to force it upon me.[QUOTE="Pixel-Pirate"][QUOTE="Kurezan"]
