"We must continue to go into space for humanity. If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way," Professor Hawking said, adding that "we won't survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet."

Maybe the USA cut NASA funding too soon? I call mars!

He's right. There will definetly come a time when this becomes an issue. I love space exploration and scientific discoveries.

Space colonization is extremely resource intensive, in particular for rare metals, water and energy. 1, 000 years before we run out of sufficient resources to do that sounds incredibly optimistic considering that many of our metals, fuels and other resources like even clean water have estimated lifespans measured in decades.

I'm surprised he said 1000 years. Mind you, in that time we may find ways to reverse the damage we have done to the planet. That's a massive amount of time considering the rate at which technology is advancing. We'll have to leave this planet eventually though.

I can' t say I' m surprised considering the rate at which we exploit our planet' s resources and damage its atmosphere. I would guess 1000 years will be enough to find a permanent new home.

Man I hate these Stephen Hawking news. Everytime he opens his mouth, people go crazy and treat it like absolute truth. I remember a year back here at Gamespot, someone made post going like: "Stephen Hawking says there might be aliens" and people were like: WAIT IF STEPHEN HAWKINGS SAID SO THEN WELL THEN THERE MIGHT BE ALIENS! WHAT A GENIUS!

To leave this planet would no doubt require resources far beyond that of one Country. Before we can even start to build anything worth sending into space in hopes of colinisation, we would need to come together, united as one group. With the world and it's nuclear bombs and all the wars going on, I can't see that happeing just yet.

You might be able to go into space though. There are flights that go into orbit. They are pricey, but give it a couple years maybe a decade and you may very well be financially capable of experiencing space.

Yeah maybe by the time I'm 80 and I save all my money, not spending a penny. :)

I think he was implying that we'll continue to use up Earth's resources/harm the planet in that time.

I think there's a bit of truth to his words, but each time we get this gloom and doom news, it's never as bad as it seems, or we make changes that improve the situation a bit.

By that time we'll use quantum jumps to spawn products and resources from other galaxies.

Though one could question the time period he mentioned, this sort of thing should come as no surprise to anyone. Population size and lack of space/resources will make expanding out from earth essential to our species survival.

The world population is over 7 billion people, the population growth will go over the world wide food production. Probably in the next 40 years, there will be 1 or 2 billion deaths from starvation because there is just not enough food in the world. Rare earth metals of Lanthanum, Europium, Erbium and Neodymium will become higher in demand in the next 30 years or so. Assuming if China and India middle class were to keep on growing equaling the total population of the United States, the demand for rare earth metals would get even higher. The moon will be once again spark a space race to be able to get these rare earth metals, and to pay for each mission is by also getting copper, gold, silver that would be sold off to high technology industries. Expanding over to Mars wont solve any Earth problems. Earth will still experience overpopulation, pollution, food shortages, and decreasing of easy available resources. Going to Mars will cause our species to splinter off, pretty much causing new forms of government, making their own food, and mining their own resources for their uses without sending it back to Earth. If 10,000 births happen a day, you would need to send shuttles of 10,000 people every single day to equal out the population growth.

I though we produced more then enough food to feed everyone on the planet multiple times over. I thought the barriers to avoid famine involved politics more then anything else.

I'm a little surprised it is that long. We definitely have to move out into space and colonize. It's the next logical step.

well, his opinion on such matters is certainly more valuable than anyone here in gs, so it's not surprising that people gravitate to what he says

1000 years for humans to peace off of earth seems like a good estimate--but then again, who knows where technology will be at that point?

For society as we know? Probably, but I doubt the entire human species will be gone in just a thousand years barring an asteroid strike or something.

Ugh, what?...nothing you said even remotely refutes the fact that we have to move off earth to survive, and does nothing to support the idea that we would need to. You would have to be utterly ignorant to think a growing species that uses so many resources can survive without expanding beyond the territories we already inhabit. That would be like saying if humanity originated in the Africa, it would still be what it is today, or even have survived, if it hadn't expanding to new lands.

Assuming we don't find any amazing new technology I think he's being kind of generous. There's really no point in putting this off anyway, we know the earth isn't going to cut it forever so may as well perfect the tech before we're really pressed for time.

Wouldn't it make more sense to perfect the technology that would allow us to continue to live on Earth?

Eventually we're going to have to leave if we survive long enough so we may as well get good at it before that happens. It's not like you have to chose one or the other and only focus on one. If anything disastrous happens to Earth having an insurance planet would be good.

You win the prize......of course that's why he did it....he gets press....people talk....and no one can call him wrong. Though it's funny to see people take this seriously.
