Thankfully I'll be dead long before this happens so it isn't an issue for me.

This is the stupidest things I have ever heard out of the "smartest" man in the world say. There is nothing that we could do that would make earth unihabital that won't be prevented/fixed with our technology. (And if something did happen, it would happen much sooner than 1000 years from now)
[QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]Though one could question the time period he mentioned, this sort of thing should come as no surprise to anyone. Population size and lack of space/resources will make expanding out from earth essential to our species survival. Jd1680aThe world population is over 7 billion people, the population growth will go over the world wide food production. Probably in the next 40 years, there will be 1 or 2 billion deaths from starvation because there is just not enough food in the world. Rare earth metals of Lanthanum, Europium, Erbium and Neodymium will become higher in demand in the next 30 years or so. Assuming if China and India middle class were to keep on growing equaling the total population of the United States, the demand for rare earth metals would get even higher. The moon will be once again spark a space race to be able to get these rare earth metals, and to pay for each mission is by also getting copper, gold, silver that would be sold off to high technology industries. Expanding over to Mars wont solve any Earth problems. Earth will still experience overpopulation, pollution, food shortages, and decreasing of easy available resources. Going to Mars will cause our species to splinter off, pretty much causing new forms of government, making their own food, and mining their own resources for their uses without sending it back to Earth. If 10,000 births happen a day, you would need to send shuttles of 10,000 people every single day to equal out the population growth. You know that they said the same thing about starvation 30-40 years ago and there is much more food per person today than there was back then. The world population. Population in 40 years is expected to peak about 9.3 billion, at which point it will begin to shrink again--about 1/2 of the worlds countries have a fertility rate at or below 2.1 which is the point that population will to decline. The effects are masked in many countries because there has been a drastic drop in death rates, but fertility rate drop is outpacing death rate drop world wide, so eventually the population stabilizes and will start to shrink.

If we expand beyond our resources, there'll just be massive numbers of us dying off. But chances are that the species will continue on for quite a while after that.

Yea, there's a pretty big difference between this type of society not existing anymore and us just plain old not existing anymore.
Always great to see somebody go into a rage over minor things. Guess it's not possible I found it interesting and felt like seeing peoples views on it? Nah, If I took this seriously then you actually read the entire article. And we both know neither are true.Man I hate these Stephen Hawking news. Everytime he opens his mouth, people go crazy and treat it like absolute truth. I remember a year back here at Gamespot, someone made post going like: "Stephen Hawking says there might be aliens" and people were like: WAIT IF STEPHEN HAWKINGS SAID SO THEN WELL THEN THERE MIGHT BE ALIENS! WHAT A GENIUS!

There is no way he can say that with certainty. There is nothing to worry about. Unless you get your jollies from doomsday theories and alarming facts, then go ahead.
I'm surprised he said 1000 years. Mind you, in that time we may find ways to reverse the damage we have done to the planet. That's a massive amount of time considering the rate at which technology is advancing. We'll have to leave this planet eventually though.

Haha you think we have damaged our planet. haha. You must be one egotistical bastard to give yourself so much credit.

Can you prove otherwise? or is the ozone hole just a librul conspiracy"Breaking news, Stephen Hawking states the obvious and OT creams its pants."Man I hate these Stephen Hawking news. We can't kill the planet without using all of our nukes at once in a fantastic fireworks show. But we can alter the climate enough to highly alter or endanger our own species. The rest of the planet will recover itself.

I hate liberals and conservatives equally, both are narrow-minded. Actually conservatives slightly less so.
Ozone hole? What do you live in the 90's? I'm not gonna get into a debate here but it's been found that most of the Ozone depletion is not caused by CFC's, and even if it was, we don't produce enough to have a huge impact. I mean, who walks around with two hairspray cans causing mayhem? No one.
