I just started reading his books. I've finished "The Stand" and "Insomnia".

I'm halfway through "Dreamcatcher" and it's pretty meh. I hate how he always cuts away to some backstory at terrible times. It will be a tense moment or something and he'll start taking about a childhood memory for no reason.

I've heard the Dark Tower series is pretty good, but what are some of his good novels?

My favorite is probably the stand, followed by needful things.

Couldn't really get into insomnia, it's my least favorite.

I like Salem's Lot. I tried to read Under the Dome but it got to the point where I began to think all he was going to talk about was people running into the invisible dome.

Best: The Stand, Pet Semetary, Dark Tower series, 'Salem's Lot, and his short story collections. Worst: From a Buick 8.

Also I really liked 11/22/63, probably his best book in years. Wasn't a fan of the last little bit though.

Try Salem's Lot, The Running Man, The Long Walk, The Dead Zone and Christine.

There are also his short story/novella collections like Different Seasons and Full Dark, No Stars.

Favorite is pretty tough for me to pick, but I can say that Duma Key has been my least favorite I think. I just really didn't care for it at all. raven_squad

I'm reading Duma Key right now (I've finished everything of his except for that book, 11/22/63, and the new Dark Tower book) and I do have to admit that it's hard to get into. Hopefully it will get better.

His best work is in the novella collection Different Seasons which contains Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, The Body and The Breathing Method.Breathing Method is substantially weaker than the first three (which are masterpieces) but it's still pretty good.

Some of my other favorites are The Shining, It, The Stand, The Dead Zone, Bag of Bones, Cujo, Firestarter, Pet Sematary, The Green Mile, Misery, Desperation among others.

Under the Dome is one of his best recent novels. Not as good as The Stand (which it is similar to), but suprisingly great for being a recent SK novel.

Was the IT book's ending the same as the movie if so wouldn't that be the biggest joke ever?shadowkiller11

The ending in the book version of It is also quite dumb, but everything that comes before the ending is so brilliant that it doesn't matter so much.

I'm sure it did since there's probably no way to make the mess Dreamcatcher is watchable.

I never bothered to see the movie tho.

There really aren't any bad ones per se. I did however find The Eyes of the Dragon a refreshing change from the standard, uber high detail of his standard works. The Dark Tower series might be my favorite although I'm only on book 5 of 7 and just started it basically.

dave123321
Will you be getting the new Dark Tower book? Set between the 4th and 5th books, though most is set in the past like the 4th book. Also seems like it would fit right in if you read that one between 4 and 5 from what I heard

I didn't know it was between those two. I saw that people were talking about something like that but I didn't understand what they were talking about. I guess I should then and read it first. It's weird that he would prequel 5 after finishing all 7. There must have been people thinking there was a hole between the two but as I started book 5, I really didn't see it.

I like, in some fashion, virtually all of his older works. My favorites are probably Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Tower Series (although it ended on a low note), IT, The Stand, The Shining, and Eye of the Dragon. I think each of these excels in different ways, really.

I've stopped reading his recent works because I no longer find them worth continuing once I start. I may have to pick up The Wind Through the Keyhole, though.

It's actually supposed to be done pretty well. My sister has been watching some of the shows that are set to come out and they're getting much, much better with the things they are coming out with. Gone are the days of ALL cheaply done works. I think they're trying to vy for a legitimate channel with quality programming.

Favorite: His most notable classics are all really close. IT, The Stand and The Shining. I also enjoyed Under the Dome quite a bit but I really hated the origin of the dome itself. All the characters within the dome were great though. Worst: Tommyknockers

So far think I've only read these ones

  • Firestarter
  • Under the Dome
  • Full Dark, No Stars
  • Nightmares & Dreamscapes

and out of those I liked Under the Dome and Firestarter best.

I do intend on getting more books from Stephen King want to get 11/22/63, The Shining, Carrie, The Wind through the Keyhole along with some others.

Really hard to say. I really loved IT and the Shining, enjoyed Firestarter, and liked the Talisman. Really wanted to love The Stand but it's soooo looong and heavy handed with the good vs. evil allegory. Bleh. Worst was probably Cell. Pretty sure everyone forgot about it, otherwise I'm sure it'd be on everyones "worst".

Tie between The Stand and Misery. I'm about half way through the first Dark Tower book at the moment. I'm hoping it gets a bit better to be honest. My favourite from Different Seasons is definitely Apt Pupil. Too bad the movie sucked.

Hey, is Stephen King's new novel 11/22/63 worth reading? I found it at Barnes and Noble one day and holy sh*t that is a thick book. I am thinking of maybe getting it for the kindle on my Asus Transformer Prime app this summer for fun.

The whole story seems intriguing and I've always been interested in the JFK assasination (personally I think it was either our Government or the Mafia that did it IMO which only seems the two most logical theories behind the assasination). So any input would be greatly appreciated :)

I'd consider myself a pretty big (but fairly new) Stephen King fan. Of the works of his that I've read in the past three or four years, here are my most to least favourite.

The Stand

Different Seasons (novellas)

The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger

11/22/63

Bag of Bones

The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower

Skeleton Crew (stories, including "The Mist")

The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three

Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales

It (Would be lower, but I am willfully ignoring the last 50-100 pages)

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (nonfiction autobiography)

Full Dark, No Stars

The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands

The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah

The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla

Just After Sunset

The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass

And all the way down here, where they should remain buried: Under the Dome Needful Things
