I just had to share this with some strangers... :)
Anyway, my best friend called me and told me the shocking news today (kinda funny, because I "felt" something was wrong. Just like they show in the movies. I had been having a strange feeling). He was at his wife's house (they are seperated) waiting on her. His 23 year old, slightlydisabled stepson was also there. He was in a bedroom in the back of the house when he heard loud voices. The would-be crooks put a gun to his stepsons head while he was out on the patio and forced him inside.
At first, my friend thought his other stepson must have stopped by and that they were just talking loud. But quickly, he realized what was going on. The thieves did not know he was there. He quietly called the cops on his cell phone, but then he heard one of the robbers coming towards the bedrooms. He kicked his phone under the bed, and got in under the sheets to pretend he was asleep.
Now, my best friend is about 6 foot, 4 inches tall. And about 240 pounds. Very athletic, and again, they did not expect him. He could have gotten this guy. But he did not know how many people were inside, plus they may have shot his stepson and ran. So he did the right thing. I was just arguing herelast week that gun ownership can't help you if someone is intent on causing you harm. This is almost a textbook example. There was no time for his stepson to respond, and it was safer for everyone if my friend just let them get him.
So, the bad guy puts a gun to my friends head. Pulls back the hammer and makes my friend get out of the bed and puts the sheet over his head. He pistol whips him a bit, throws him to the floor, then then makes him crawl to the living room with the others, kicking him along the way. By this time they see they are not going to get what they were looking for; his OTHER stepson.
One of the guys says "kill them and let's go!" Another says "No time! Let's just leave". Don't know if someone was watching out and saw police lights in the distance or what, but they start leaving in pairs. The last one was not so lucky. He got to the driveway, and cops shot him. My friend comes out the house, and of course the cops are edgy, trying to make sure he was not one of the robbers. They were a little rough with him, but a guy we went to high school withis an officer on that force. He told the other officers "I know him", and helped my friend off the ground.
Turns out there were about 5 or 6 involved. They one that was shot snitched (they always do), and they caught 3 others. They are still looking for 1 or 2 more. The one that was shot died on the operating table.
Thank God his wife was late coming home with their 5 year old daughter, and no one (beside the crook) were seriously hurt.
This is nuts, though! Have any of you ever dealt with anything like this?
