Just curious...

I do not study outside of school, though sometimes I do take some notes, most of the time I just listen in class and do my homework. So far that has worked out pretty well, my GPA is an A average.

Being in Cross Country is also a good motivator, though the standards are really low.

I study some things outside of school... It helps sometimes, but the easiest way for me to pass tests is to pay attention in class (something I have a hard time doing).

I agree. I think you can greatly reduce your workload if you simply pay attention in class. My actualy studying for tests and quizzes doesn't take very long because I try to be at 100% when I'm in class.

Yes, seeing as I'm hoping to break into the medical fields. You kind of have to with higher-tiered university professions :/

Other than my Japanese language courses, I don't remember really studying for any exams in university. I just went to class, paid attention, and completed all the assignments and tests.

College can be a joke too, it all depends on what you take though. Some of my friends think university is a breeze because they only have 15 hours on campus and no real homework because they're getting an arts degree, or something to that accord. Meanwhile some science students are clocking in 30+ hours on campus a week between lectures and lab work, plus weekly assignments, reports, and evaluations.

Depends on the class, this year I have to study a lot. For math, I almost never study. You just have to listen to the teacher and pay attention in class, and studying shouldn't be that necessary later on, unless the teacher sucks (like my AP Physics teacher :( )

A little, but I try to keep up with the work load so it isn't necessary. I take notes in class and then digitise them and cross reference them with the lecture slides and other sources.

Also @TC that only really works in HS, that dosn't work in college as you are expected to do self study for most courses. My modules have 3x as much self study time as contact time allocated.

It really depends on your program(in university). Some courses are straightforward and you can easily get by just paying attention in class. Others, not so much.

When I was in engineering, I studied my butt off and still did terrible, the material just wasn't for me. I switched to a business degree and now I rarely study and do much much much better.

Nope. The only courses I kind of study for are foreign language courses and a few math-required classes, other than that, I rarely rarely study. College fits me I guess, while High School was a pain to go through.

You aren't told what to do so you can fit things to your liking.

You aren't given much homework and/or busy work to do, which is a huge plus for me because I hate busy work.

Your grade is based off tests and a few other things which I like. I get a bunch of essay tests, which is better than multiple choice IMO.

Courses are staright-forward, lecture-based, and/or debate based for my major. No hand-holding, which I love. There are countless times in where I would get annoyed at the Courses and students who would hold back the **** Ugh

I never read my books and rarely buy them too....saves me money :) College is much easier than the over-regulated, standarized, High School system, for me.

LMAO...I meant in books. I've only used the books required by the prof. in 8% of the courses I've taken. I don't even bother buying the book and still get A in the courses.

and I'm about to graduate with my B.A. next year. =)

Who knows...things become easier and easier as you get accustomed to it. I remember in High school, it was a pain to write up a 5 page paper.

Now I can write one in less then hour.

I didn't in high school and in the first year of college, which put me in the B/A range.

Then I actually figured out what I wanted to do, got motived plus I feel like it will help me in my career and stuff (I started to realize some of the stuff was a good idea to learn, not just study and forget after the test is done).

Now I am a first year graduate student, and have a Bacterial Genetics book opened for a test that isn't for another like 10 days.

I did not study in high school. When the teacher lectured and taught a lesson, that was usually the last I heard of it until test time.

Krelian-co

Eh?

If you're doing art you have to study your ass off, an art degree by itself won't get you far you need to have a portfolio. Also you're expected to practice outside class. If you took something like music for instance you'ld be expected to learn to play atleast one instrument outside of class to a high degree.

No comparing College to High-school is a joke, that's like comparing high school to Junior High or Elementary school, of course its harder its a higher level of education. For things like this comparison is not a accurate representation of the actual difficulty of a certain field. High School can be quite challenging, even more so when your taking a foreign language, and 7 classes or 8 hours a day like I am doing.Unlike junior high, attendance is a must as a majority of the information and subjects that you learn in class does not involve the textbook, which means if your having a off day or your not paying attention you are screwed. Then take into account sports like Cross Country and Track and Field that require you to train 7 days a week with very few days off during the entire season. High School isnt a cakewalk, it requires effort and intelligence if you want to go to College and excel. Oh and there are tons of students who work part-time on top of all these things I already mentioned. But you are right if your a slacker who gets by with Ds and Cs and don't have any responsibilities and do not care about your future, High School is a joke.

And just like College the summer isnt really a break, working full-time during the summer is a rather lucrative way of saving money.

You addressed it by comparing it to elementary school? Gee, sounds like a poor comparison. Are you even attending college?

You misunderstood my post, In no way did I attempt to belittle College in anyway, I was simply stating that just like comparing high school to lower levels of education such as elementary school is pointless, it is also pointless comparing college to high school. Of course College is more difficult than High School, its a higher level of education that requires 4 years of high school to even begin. That is not the point.

The point is when discussing about the difficulty and complexity of a certain field such as advanced secondary education, you can not use comparison as a means of dong so. You have to judge each level of education on its own in order to accurately represent each group of students. Something a College student would find easy could be hard for a high school student and so on simply because we are talking about different age groups and knowledge bases. Objectably hard or easy college is more complex and demanding than high school, thats a given.

I usually just take notes in class and listen, usually cramming right before a test...

I don't know I guess I am just not a good note taker... I never really learned any formal or good way of taking notes, I usually just pop a couple bullet points down with the main points and details relating to it, then extra points indented a little for any caveat added after the fact... But then I look at it later and it seems out of context and jumbled...

I mean it has worked thus far, I have a 3.93 GPA and I am in my third year (got 3 B's :() - But I don't enjoy it and don't recommend it. Learn better note taking skills and study, it will help. Because to be honest, my method leaves me forgeting everything I learned after the fact unless it is of interest to me... Like I took a class on 20th century US military history and easily aced it and I remember everything and still did everything like I always did, that was over a year ago, but I enjoy that topic and thus remember it... But like just last spring I took a psychology general education course and don't remember a damn thing... And the only way to remember the stuff that doesn't come easily or enjoyably is through repitition... So take notes, read them, read them some more, and then read them again...

[QUOTE="Brean24"] I believe I did. I was responding to the notion that High School is a joke compared to College. Not only did I address high school being a joke, I also addressed the first part of the post in the first two sentences. Brean24

I never said you were belittling college. I was pointing out that if you don't attend college, then your comparison has no real substance.

Not so much, but I listen in class and take notes then review them later. Although that only works for a while, specifically basic or intro courses. The more advanced into your major you get, the more studying it requires. So now I'm stuck with my bad habits of not studying enough and struggling to change this.

Hmm, fair enough, you have attended college, what is your view on this matter?

What does any of that have to do with how much you study?

Also there are other sources of info than text books, you could easily just borrow a friend's notes.
