http://healthland.time.com/2012/01/10/study-smoking-marijuana-not-linked-with-lung-damage/

According to this article, a 20 year study was just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that shows that not only does marijuana not harm one's lungs, but it can actually help them, supposedly because smoking requires one to take a deep breath and hold in the smoke.

Even in extremely heavy users, lung function was essentially the same as non-smokers.

I mean seriously, pot...lol. yeah another good point to rub at the anti legalization.

Go to Amsterdam. And this is very good news. There is no practical reason that marijuana should be illegal.

On what basis do you disagree with this 20 year, AMA published study that included 5,115 participants?

Apparently this has already been shown by previous research and this is just the most thorough study to date.

Hmm, I saw a study on tv that showed MRI's of pot smokers' lungs, and the pot smokers had lung ages well over twice that of other people. Generally speaking, pot is definitely a harmful carcinogen, but it's side effects depend on alot of other factors as well. The best distance runner that I knew in high school chain smoked cigarettes, but so did the worst runners. He just kept his lungs in very good shape...

thats bs...most of those studies are bs, they call them studies and say that "95% of the people showed up signs that smoking pot is terrible and can kill you!!!" and then you find out they only used 10 people in the poll...what you have here is a 20 years old study which used over 5k of participants...in case you dont know the scientific community deems a poll worthy and credible only if they have over 1000 participants.

The study covered both marijuana and cigarette smoking. Cigarette smokers experienced substantial decline in lung function, marijuana users experienced none.

superfluidity
The topic title is dubious. According to what ABC News reports, the principal investigator of the study, Dr. Stefan Kertesz, says that "the enhanced lung capacity could be due to the extended and heavy inhalations done while smoking marijuana rather than any beneficial effect" (emphasis mine). Here's a relevant excerpt from the news article: [QUOTE="Mikaela Conley reporting for ABC News"]Those who smoked less than the heaviest actually saw a slight increase in air flow and lung function. But otherwise, researchers actually saw a slight increase in lung function among marijuana users. While an adult male blows out about four liters of air in one second, those who occasionally smoked weed could blow out those four liters, plus another 50 milliliters -- about one-seventh of a soda can. Kertesz said that the enhanced lung capacity could be due to the extended and heavy inhalations done while smoking marijuana rather than any beneficial effect.

The study, more or less, says that low to moderate amounts of marijuana smoking doesn't cause "long-term adverse effects on lung function," and the heaviest pot smokers, which are those considered to be smoking at least 20 joints a month, did. In fact, "Experts agreed that the study does not provide evidence that marijuana smoking is healthy for the lungs, but that marijuana is indeed a complex substance." I encourage you to read the whole thing.

Known this for years... it increases your heart rate too (not to dangerous levels, again it is probably more beneficial than bad).

Here's what you need to know. The study took the data from people who smoked 2-3 times a month. Here's a quote from the study...

Marijuana may have beneficial effects on pain control, appetite, mood, and management of other chronic symptoms. Our findings suggest that occasional use of marijuana for these or other purposes may not be associated with adverse consequences on pulmonary function. It is more difficult to estimate the potential effects of regular heavy use, because this pattern of use is relatively rare in our study sample; however, our findings do suggest an accelerated decline in pulmonary function with heavy use and a resulting need for caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered.

study

Then I have this evidence of a study that showed that 3 joints a day = 20 cigarettes worth of damage.

I'm not saying it should be illegal, only that these "it's good for you" crap is nonsense in the long run. The study uses words like "may" and "suggest" which bascially renders the idea that it is in fact good for you useless.

You're just trying to spin a study which again makes only suggestions that it could be benificial to it being a fact.

This is the same as all of those other stupid cancer and health craze scares. When ever you read words like "may" and "suggest" it's best to ignore the whole thing.

"FEV1 and FVC both actually increased with moderate and occasional use of marijuana," says Dr. Mark Pletcher, associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco and the lead author of the study.

That was a bit of a surprise, says Pletcher, since "There are clearly adverse effects from tobacco use and marijuana smoke has a lot of the same constituents as tobacco smoke does so we thought it might have some of the same harmful effects. It's a weird effect to see and we couldn't make it go away," he adds, explaining that the researchers used statistical models to look for errors or other factors that could explain the apparent benefit and did not find them."

What this says to me is that marijuana is a harmless substance in terms of physical health.

Also, this was a major study, the most extensive to date. It's rediculous and probably a little disrespectful to just say "it's best to ignore the whole thing."
