Could see it now - one car hits another, that car bumps around like a pin ball bumping other cars(with some flying off the roads). Lots of whiplash too.mrgabThat thought make me laugh. Hard.
We wouldn't need anything like this if people weren't such stupid drivers.Scooter540
A device like what the TC is talking about would only increase the number of those stupid drivers on the road

I am glad that I am not the only one. The worse part is I was on a serious phone call when I read it.

But maybe decrease accidents, possibly fatalities on the road if a lot of the impact could be put into highly pressurized air cushions. In the future I can see magnets as a good way of preventing accidents. Magnets are extremely powerful, and if they can prevent 100 million degrees F(the sun is like 30 million degrees) from escaping a test cube reactor, then it can definitely prevent cars from colliding with other cars/obstacles. But we definitely shouldn't keep cars vulnerable to scratches and dents and total destruction just so we can encourage people to be more careful because 1 million people a year die from these types of accidnets each year in the world.

But people would still be moving really fast inside the car, still causing injuries.[QUOTE="RyuHayabusaX"][QUOTE="chathuranga"][QUOTE="Scooter540"]We wouldn't need anything like this if people weren't such stupid drivers.Tuky06

But people would still be moving really fast inside the car, still causing injuries.True, while a magnet may make a car go from say 45mph to 0, the human body is still going 45 and it has to deal with that sudden stop and the brain and all the other organs going everywhere else. But that same thing happens in accidents today, except the shock waves from the other vehicle cause even greater damage when they reach the brain. Of course in high way accidents if you're going 70mph and the magnet stops the car you might not be feeling too good afterwards but at least you wouldn't be crushed by the 18 wheeler that will have no mercy for you.Wouldn't you think a protective rubber around a car's bumper would provoke people to hit each other?metallica_fan42Yeah I did think of that before and you might see more people doing real tailgating. Now I'm not asking for it to get this complicated but you could have sensors on the rubber and if that rubber comes into contact with the rubber from another car it'll register it as a warning/points loss or something depending on the circumstances(ie one car is still and the other is going 2 mph and barely touches it). But yeah I don't think it should get to that point but you're definitely right in how drivers will be more free to hit each other knowing they won't cause damage but there should definitely be a system for punishing drivers who still hit the car. I Think the whole point here is to prevent damage to the car.
Umm actually with my other point, with a magnet, you wouldn't be able to hit the other car, the magnet would keep you at a good distance. So you could tailgate but you would never hit them, and you could be really stupid and go 45mph into a still car but you'll just have to go through that sudden deacceleration because you were stupid.
That's what the bumpers are for. They are not rubber because they are designed to be crushed while obsorbing the impact, instead of returning the impact. And in real crash, rubber is not enough. Bumper cars are only light weight 5mph collisions; too weak.magicalclickBumpers give protection but then you have to go through the hastle of dealing with the scratches, damage, insurance, and the bad memories that come with it. I think that in the future we should use an advanced form of magnets that prevents cars from say going within 1 cm of each other but they can easily do something else with this idea.
That'll just make me want to drive into people, for fun. Especially if you see a friend on the road. Be like 'Hey Andrew, I'm coming for ya !' and then phump!
