Hey look, an alliteration!

Here's a link.

By James Nye

PUBLISHED: 15:17 EST, 27 October 2012 | UPDATED: 16:20 EST, 27 October 2012

A sensitive and peace-loving 16-year-old boy from an affluent Georgia suburb was fatally gunned down by a police sniper in his own house after he threatened to kill himself following a bad day at school.

Young Andrew Messina cracked after receiving a bad grade and upon returning home he grabbed his parents .357 Magnum and told his mother he wanted to end his life.

Panicked, she called the police to come and talk him down, but instead, an army of deputies, an armoured tank and a sniper arrived at their Towne Lake home who eventually shot the boy dead after he smashed a door window with the handgun.

Lisa Messina (left) has spoken of her devastation at the death of her boy Andrew (right) who was shot dead by police after pulling a gun on himself at his Atlanta home

Andrew Messina was shot dead by a police sniper after the suicidal teen smashed his gun through a glass pane in his front door during a police stand off

Speaking out for the first time since the tragic May 1st accident at their Towne Lake home, Andrew's parents Nick and Lisa said they still struggled to believe the chain of events that led to their boy's death and the way that police have closed ranks since the fatal shooting.

'He just got sad and kind of down on himself and talked about running away. And that discussion turned to ending his life. And I wasn't home,' Nick Messina said to CBS Atlanta.

'It just happened so fast, and then he went upstairs. He has the gun in his hand, and he had bullets in the other hand,' Lisa Messina continued.Making a panicked 911 call, Lisa Messina was more concerned for her son's safety than her own.

Kid gets mad over a grade and parents didn't first try to diffuse the situation before calling the cops? :?

This really is a tragedy, but I can't help but blame the kid. When you aggresively make an action with a gun toward police things aren't going to end well. However, I certainly think the police could have handled it better.

He cracked and went nuts over a bad grade? Seriously, WTF is wrong with kids today. Again, there is a serious epidemic with today's kids where their answer to everything is suicide. :|

He only had one .357 magnum.

This is the problem, as well alll know, more guns equal less gun deaths and gun crime. If the household contained a larger selection of guns this disaster could have been avoided.

In a normal society the police officer would lose his job and spend a couple of years in jail.

I highly doubt it was an actual tank. The reporter probably saw the ATV and thought it was a tank. Police don't have access to tanks...

People put to much emphasis on school, when you tell a kid that getting a couple of bad grades will wind up causing him to live a life of jobless squalor, they tend to over react. This kid was likely put under the gun so to speak by the parents to get good grades in school. And the pressure caused him to crack.

That makes sense. Then again, you'd think the reporter would have been smart enough to realize that it wasn't a tank, but perhaps he or she is a sensationalist.

You'd be surprised how many times I've heard people mistake police ATV's for tanks. You have to remember how stupid your average person is. Also "tank' makes for a better story.

The redneck police department probably had nothing better to do that day. Which explains why they brought an armoured vehicle to battle a teenager with a gun. Fire the entire department and replace it with people that aren't products of incest..

If people are seriously thinking an ATV is a tank they are not only stupid, but borderline retarded or actually retarded:lol:

Sad story, I felt like the police could have handled it better but not much they can do when someone is waving a gun around

Why am I not surprised that some of you are defending this?

Some points from the article though, he sure had it coming didn't he (...not) :

"telephoned his distraught father outside... Police at the scene cut off that phone call and placed negotiators to the side of the front door within earshot of Andrew."
"Andrew can be heard to ask to speak to his father several times."
"There is nobody in there with him. There is nobody at risk except himself. You just give it time, just wait,' Pekor said about the standoff which had lasted a little more than an hour."
"'Not a single officer out there, not a one, ever saw the gun come through the hole where the break was.'"
"This is because he was shot sideways through his abdomen, with the bullet entering his right side and exiting the left.

This meant that the right handed boy would have been facing the opposite direction to the police team when he was shot."

lmao guys, are some of you seriously defending the cops actions??? Honestly, they should've just left him alone, or the parents shouldn't just walked straight in there.

Bad moveon the cops part, they only escalated the situation. They didn't need to bring a swat team or a tank.

So kid basically smashes the gun through the front door, clearly a sign of aggression with a gun towards the police, can't blame the police for shooting him. Sucks that he died but jeez what a softie, killing himself over a bad grade? Kids are getting weaker these days.

Really?

First of all, why were they even in sight? Why weren't they behind some cover or something if he was such a threat? Were they just standing right outside the window baiting him or what?

So basically they cut him off from this dad, approached the house, chillin' some right outside the windows and then sniper him? Sounds more like pure assassination to me. They did just about everything wrong, more like they tried to find a reason to kill him to get some of dat action.

This smells like the classic case of someone who couldn't do it themselves so they go at police with a weapon so they'd do it for them. Happens all the time. The reason there was such a police force there is because when there's someone held up in a building with weapons looking to harm someone, they don't take any chances. They aren't going to send one cop into a house with an unstable person with a gun. They always bring a group. It's pretty standard procedure.

He only had one .357 magnum.

This is the problem, as well alll know, more guns equal less gun deaths and gun crime. If the household contained a larger selection of guns this disaster could have been avoided.

I'm sorry but everyone got what they deserved. Kid wanted to be stupid and play with guns, their parents took action. Parents wanted armed cops involved, they asked for it.Kid wanted to play with a gun in front of officers, he asked for them to take action. You have to respect authority, you cross the line and they are entitled to serious action. I do not feel bad at all for any of the parties involved.

But he was alone in a big house? The only other potential targets were the cops that insisted on standing as close to him as possible?

This smells like the classic case of someone who couldn't do it themselves so they go at police with a weapon so they'd do it for them. Happens all the time. Still:
Solution for that classic case; don't give the person an opportunity to be threat. Don't stand in an open field just taunting him, take cover. Of course they shouldn't send in a cop but this could've gotten a happy ending if they would've just waited for the dad, whom he obviously treasured and also wanted to talk to.

The dad could've just walked right in there and it would've been all solved. Either he would've shot himself or the dad would've managed to calm down his son. Instead they put pressure on a scared kid, blinded by anger until he caved in and did something stupid and got himself killed. They had an angry 16 year old kid inside an empty house, they're the police, they're the calm grown ups that was there to make sure things would end peacefully and they were there to make sure the kid didn't do anything he would regret. Instead they did the opposite.

Pure assassination pretty much. Next time they might as well bring the sniper only.
