@thegerg: you my friend are a weirdo.

@thegerg: "Wow. What you're basically saying is that you an increased rate of deaths from these activities before you are willing to admit there is a problem, but as long as the rate of deaths caused by these activities stays as it is then you are happy with that. Gross."
Hmmm!!
"I'm just using your own logic here"
That's all well and good to use my logic but use my logic appropriately because I never said that there is Not a problem with those activities, and I never played down the seriousness of a death caused by those activities and I never said that it's not worth worrying about because deaths caused by such activities are rare.
I'd prefer responsible, well-trained citizens be allowed to carry weapons for self-defence than have to rely on the police. With response times in the 25-45 minute range, I'd rather not take any chances.
Open carry is just arrogant and useless. Conceal carry is an active deterrent which has been proven to lower crime rates on numerous occasions.
I hate the gun laws in Canada due to the fact they make legitimate gun owners lives a living hell (you not only have to go through rigorous testing just to buy a handgun, but if you ever plan on moving it, you have to call the police and provide a detailed (to the minute) route of how you will be transporting it and where) and do absolutelynothingto prevent criminals and mentally ill psychopaths from getting their hands on weapons (the recent Moncton shooter's guns were illegally acquired and modified).
I personally want to own two guns. That's it. A 9mm handgun (probably a Beretta 92F) for concealed carry self-defence and a Remington 700 for range shooting. But since I live in Canada, the only self-defence weapon I am allowed to have is a shotgun... and that must be kept locked in a gun safe at home, with a trigger lock, and the ammunition kept in a separate location, also locked away. It's absolutely fucking stupid.
People are going to get their hands on guns. There is a huge black market. Hell, if they really want someone dead, they won't use a gun, they'll stab them or strangle them. Guns don't kill people, in fact, they've been known to save plenty of innocent lives. [/rant]
As for the topic at hand:
tl;dr
Open carry is stupid and wholly unnecessary unless there is a state of emergency and the government is no longer in power and police/military forces have disbanded or during a civil or international war and there is no one but yourself and your community to defend your people and your land.

What, how the hell do they expect someone to defend himself with a shotgun if it's locked up and the ammo is locked in a separate location (does that "separate location" have to be a certain distance away from the gun?). That basically renders the gun useless, if someone does try to use it to defend himself, he'll probably get shot before he can even load the thing. You'd be better off just using an antique musket or something like that.
@whipassmt: Jeese man!! You may as well just not have a gun at all. All those securing of the gun measures render the thing useless. I understand the safety measures of locking away so only you have access, but in a situation where you have to defend your family and home one thing you don't want to waste time doing is fiddling around with keys and locks and loading up bullets, time is of the escents.

I think you have to keep the ammo in a separate place (not in the safe with the gun), but it can be in the same room (I'm going to get my PAL on Saturday, so I'm going to find out the exact laws). In Australia, you have to store the ammo in an entirely different room from the gun in a locked safe.
Australia's gun laws makes Canada's look like the US's.
while i want to support anything that could potentially make places safer gun free zones look to me like the 1st place a nutcase would want to shoot up.
but really as far as risk assessment goes worrying about shit like this is like worrying about everything else we worry about that is never going to happen while we kill ourselves overeating, drinking and smoking.
want a vastly safer world to live in?
install better lighting around all your stairs and put grippy things in the bottom of your bathtub.
