Yeah, apparently only certain employees can stop shoplifters. Shoplifters that are underage. And stealing booze. And possibly driving drunk. And possibly crashing into you or your family on the way home.

And the guy was a security guard. A security guard who can't stop a thief?:|

They don't even have Target here in Hawaii. Lucky for me:D

Nope. No touchy touchy. The only person who can touch you without it being assault is an officer of the law. Sad that they fired him but they prolly have a no tolerance policy about such things. One lawsuit from angry parents about a bruise on their kid may be millions. Nevermind the fact he was stealing. THAT is what is so messed up with the world we live in.

My manager tackled a thief to the ground. It was awesome to behold as she was a middle aged woman... laying on a young man.

That's awesome.:D

You'll like this story then. 84 year old former Marine takes down a young punk robbing him at knifepoint. The robber was a teenager. Don't mess with old people.

ha ha yeah sounds like it!

I couldn't find the link but there was another former Marine last year who boxed a guy unconsious who was trying to rob a store, he was like 75 and landed 5 or 6 punches, knocked the kid out cold. Hilarious, I love when stupid criminals get their just desserts.

No, it's a Target corporate policy according to my stepbrother, who works Assets Protection for one target in Arizona. They have strong limits as to what they can do to stop shoplifters for fear of Target getting hit with lawsuits.

Which is why I'd be terrible at that job. My martial arts training means my instinct is to subdue a thief the moment words fail.

Its the most screwed up thing. Some stores actually have policies that say no store emplyee may physically cause harm to a person or persons in the store. That includes shop lifters. They even budget in an estimate loss of profits due to shoplifting. Fry's Electronics on the other hand can and will stop a shoplifter by any means and haul them inside the building and wait for the police to show up.

kind of ironic how the guy was a security guard and got fired for securing the stolen item and guarding her till the authorites could arrive

most stores have policies like that. I know that best buy has their Loss Prevention people, but if a person just runs out of the store with a 360, LP isn't allowed to touch them.

Best Buy has an account set up specifically for theft.

well, actually, asking a thief if you can help them with something really works pretty well, especially with kids.

I work part time at HMV and we'll see kids trying to open cd's and just kinda go up to them and ask them if they need help or if they were interested in listening to the cd before purchase, they get pretty freaked

But yes, firing him is ridiculous, he just did a public justice..

I don't know why he can't confront them, I know actual employee's can't, but security can.
