MILWAUKEE - Mention Amazon to the incoming class of college freshmen and they are more likely to think of shopping than the South American river. PC doesn't stand for political correctness and breaking up on Facebook is more common than any more personal encounter. These are among the 75 references on this year's Beloit College Mindset List, a compilation intended to remind teachers that college freshmen born mostly in 1993 see the world in a much different way: They fancied pogs and Tickle Me Elmo toys as children, watched televisions that never had dials and their lives have always been like a box of chocolates. Once upon a time, relatives of the current generation swore never to trust anyone over the age of 30. This group could argue: Never trust anyone older than the Net. Remember when the initials LBJ referred to President Lyndon B. Johnson? Today, according to the list, they make teenagers think of NBA star LeBron James. Still not feeling old? Consider this: Andre the Giant, River Phoenix and Frank Zappa all died before these students were born. They don't know what a Commodore 64 was, and they don't understand why Boston barflies would ever shout, "Norm!" Oh, and Ferris Bueller could be their father. Story here. Discuss - do you sometimes feel that technology is compressing the time between generations? According to the Mindset List, it is.

meh the last generation did it to the generation before that.. we never really build on culture as much as bulldoze over the last one and make a new one and when we become old people and see our culture bulldozed we to will have feelings of sadness and almost anger at how easy they have it.

I think so. but when i think of Amazon i think of three things.

Amazon the store.

Amazon the river in South America

Amazon the female warrior

Depends on context, need context of the convo.

But i do feel a disconnect. I'm only 24 years old, and talking to 18 year old and even 16 year old's, i'm feeling a disconnect. I grew up with Thundercats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes, and Ghostbusters. Just the things we reference and see things.

I was born in 86, so perhaps i'm one of the last generations to actually remember a childhood without a home computer and the internet.

 That was the idea behind Beloit College starting their Mindset List - to show how much technology has compressed the time between generations, and it serves as a reminder to teachers when they plan out course guidelines.

Really depends on the family and how you're brought up. I'm only 22, but had to use a typewriter for a long time. My parents didn't get a microwave till I was in highschool. They didn't get a cellphone for the longest time, and as you mentioned, used an dial phone. All depends on the way you were raised. To this day, I don't go overboard with technology.

You just don't know the system.:P When you quote someone at the same time they delete it, that is what you get. It's just a quirk from split-second timing. His post was still visible on my screen when I clicked quote. So I laughed when I saw it change.

I hate Lebron James. Therefore, I don't think of him when I see LBJ. I actually do think of L B Johnson.

It wasn't really a link - I guess not everybody has found the thread with the HTML workaround.

I actually remember getting the first home computer with Windows 95 on it. Had a kids learning game with Timon and Pumbaa on it.

I actually remember the first cell phones my parents got, using Sprint. I remember a lot of firsts that are considered just part and pacel for younger kids nowadays.

I remember growing up reading a lot more books and magazines, watching saturday morning cartoons, having a phone where i either spun a dial or punched in the numbers and it was not cordless.Wheverver i was living, be it USA or Saudi.

When i was kid in Saudi, before they started doing after-school cartoons, my mom would tape on VHS's saturday morning cartoons from the 80's!. so i grew up actually watching stuff like My Little Pony, Care Bears, Thundercats, etc. even live shows were from the 80's we had.

I was raised pretty old school American style. and to be honost in a lot of ways i miss those days. mid-90's Minnesota culture had a lot of charm to it. It's why i love living in that state so much. Now Minnesota just feels a lot more like any other place i find in the US save possible accent and environment.

I'm a history buff so LBJ will always mean Lyndon B Johnson.

I'm of the target group, 1993.

When someone says LBJ, I have to think abit, because honestly, I would draw a blank, but then think Lyndon B. Johnson. Also, as a child, I had a dial TV set.
I was raised abit differently from my peers, I didn't get a PC until I was about 13, I grew up taping Saturday morning cartoons if I missed them. I grew up listening to 80's music and retro gaming.

My mother says I have an "Old Soul" because I can appreciate the ideals of older generations.

I was born in '91 and I've recognized LBJ as Johnson's initials for a long time now. But hell, there are worse things than that going on in America. I recall reading an article a while ago about how a huge percentage of Americans aren't even aware of the fact that we gained our independence from Britain..plus I'm sure there's much more.

Seriously. I don't see what that has to do with technology. There were famous sports stars before things like the internet existed.

I'm also calling BS on the "more people break up via facebook than any other way" statement that the article made.

It's not a bad thing. You can't stay rooted in the past forever. My generation probably did things that the previous generations would scoff at. Times and fashions change.
