I think in theory it's completely possible, but I'm no expert on this. Supposedly the Russians in 1978 caused an earth quake and somehow directed it towards Iran. I don't know how much truth there is to this. I don't care about Hugo Chavez, but what he said isn't completely dismissable. Everyone knows that American military is always working towards the most modern technological advancements for warfare purposes, and often times we don't find out about these projects until many years later. Example A being the SR-71 Blackbird, which many people thought was a UFO if they did happen to see it.

Anyways, do you guys think tectonic weaponry is possible?

Yes I think it's possible. No I don't think anyone currently has any.

Theoretically it's possible, and we already have the means to do it. Was Haiti some sort of test? Poor, not really influential country (no offence meant to Haitians), would make a good candidate to get away with it. Sure this is tinfoil hat talk here, but the US have done far worse things, it wouldn't surprise me.

My mom believes alot in these conspiracy theroies like she thought President Bush made Hurricane Katrina and made it hit New Orleans because lots of black people lived there.( Yeah she believes anything someone tells her)

I really don't think it is possible though to make Natural disasters, atleast not yet maybe way into the future.

If anyone had it, here in the US would. We have all sorts of insane weaponry we will never know about unless God forbid we actually needed it.

If you're going to test a earthquake weapon, why not do it in a place that would actually be effective politically and maybe take out a few enemies, like North Korea or Iran?

no its not.. Our nuclear arsonals couldn't even stop a 10 mile wide asteroid from hitting the earth.. Let alone forcing a tectonic plate which is thousands of miles long..... Hell we can't even dig very far into the earth..

We Yanks have it and we also have the vehicle to counter whatever side-effects it may cause to the planet.

Yeah, has a fancy MRI-based radar and guidance system. Extreme heat and pressure keeps the vehicle safe. Wonderful machine.

Nah, it looks like a mechanical snake with sections that can be jettisoned when damaged. It's hull is also made from unobtainium. Also uses a sonic drill that can pulverise granie.

I dont know anything about this subject apparently (since i cannot see how it is theoretically possible to move the tectonic plates), so if you could care to explain to me how it would be possible to cause a major earthquake in theory, i would appreciate it. :)

Granite too, but granie probably won't handle the drill as well.

If you point a specific type of wave at water it can make the water actually boil or change the dynamics of the water. The same may also be true for magma and other liquids that exist inside the Earth. If you excite those liquids what is on top of those liquids will be effected. (Note that I'm just taking a shot in the dark :))

Here's some food for thought. Nothing man-made has ever happened in the same scale as Haiti though.

YAY! More talk of weapons of mass destruction to end the human race, how fun! I'm sure it is possible to set off a bomb that may move a tectonic plate or two, why someone would want to do that is beyond me though.

How would you go about inciting magma, though?

If we are talking about subterranian pools of water being affected by some microwave, how would you get the water to transfer its energy into soil?

IU don't know. As was stated it was a shot in the dark. However if you did find an underground pool and you began irradiatign it chances are it would react and given the link above it would more thna likely trigger an earthquake. It may not be a powerful one but it would still be one. I'm not sure abouyt exciting magma. However I'm sure if you blasted it ith continuous radiation it would alter it's chemistry in one way or another.

Yes, i am a firm believer than you can affect these things, but be the main catalyst, in such a way that you can orchestrate tectonic activity in such a way that you can claim it to be a weapon? No, i don't see how such a concept is feasible, given our current level of technology and understanding of physics

Bunker Buster bomb. Just make it extra large with a few megatons added to it. OK that will probably be more like a bomb then an Earthquake but why play around let's get the job done!

Let's assume that we (or someone else) had this kind of weaponry and used it on Haiti. Two questions:

1. Why Haiti? What possible benefit could we garner from destroying one of the most impoverished nations on the planet?

2. Why a 7.0? Why not just go for a 10.0, or, hell, push the limits on the Richter Scale and try to go for the world's first 11? If I had a weapon that could cause devastating earthquakes to my enemies, I'd use it at full power.

Clearly, we missed.

We developed the world's most advanced weapon decades before it's time, but we can't figure out how to aim it properly. :P

Actually it's estimated that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was a 13 on the richter scale.

Well, no natural tectonic earthquake has ever exceeded a 10 as far as I know.

Not natural as in the plates under our feet moving due to stresses in the faultline due to ongoing movement of those plates.

Its been proven to be possible, it is just too complicated to bother to make the effect worthwhile

Wasn't there a game that featured a similar weapon...God,that game sucked...If it's anything like that,we shouldn't even bother with it.

I think I saw something on TV about a missile that was so big and powerful it went into the ground and caused a small earthquake. So at least one country does.
