[QUOTE="kuraimen"][QUOTE="surrealnumber5"] please site any source for this right to a "good and fullfilling life" just one valid source will do, because that is the most absurd thing i have ever seen someone claim is a right.

surrealnumber5

lol so you think rights amount to living and that's it? sad world you live in. Rights actually try to guarantee that people live healthy lives which allow them to live well. Depleting the Earth from resources and destroying the environment is actually directly against that. And overpopulation is practically the main cause of that.

so now i need two citations for theright to "good and fullfilling life" and for rights "guarantee that people live healthy lives"

what are human rights according to you. Breathing and reproducing? (actually scratch breathing because without the environment you can't breath... nor reproduce... well... bummer) oh wait I know, have guns right? (can you have guns with an inhabitable Earth?)

[QUOTE="Desulated"]

If they want to die, let them. Forcing them to keep living is essentially a form of torture because they do not want to exist anymore. It doesn't help either their families and loved ones might not even give a bloody **** about their current situation.

I'm not the type of person that begs others to keep living if they wished. It's a free world, they choose to do whatever they wish.

Desulated

In the case of most teens, they will get over the pain that makes them want to die. Getting them help so they can get through it rather then blowing their brians out is not a bad thing.

Maybe it's my apathetic nature, but whatever. I could really care less about what other people wanted to do with their lives. I've thought about suicide before in my life, talking about it with others only accelerated that drive to do so even faster.

To each their own I guess. If you want to look at it from a completely logical standpoint, teens have taken a lot of time and money from society (school, daycares, parents time that could have been spent working, etc) but have not provided anything back since they have not begun working. Thus, teen suicide is bad for society and the economy.

Keepin dem teens alive means mo money in yo pocket brah.

So in the end, people want others alive just so their debts can be repaid. That makes life a material thing. But as long as their debts are paid, I doubt anyone would give a living damn if they chose to detonate their heads with a homemade explosive.

Here a link if you want http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights#Future_generations Quote: Article 1 of the declaration states "the present generations have the responsibility of ensuring that the needs and interests of present and future generations are fully safeguarded." The preamble to the declaration states that "at this point in history, the very existence of humankind and its environment are threatened" and the declaration covers a variety of issues including protection of the environment, the human genome, biodiversity, cultural heritage, peace, development, and education. The preamble recalls that the responsibilities of the present generations towards future generations has been referred to in various international instruments, including the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (UNESCO 1972), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (UN Conference on Environment and Development, 1992), the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (World Conference on Human Rights, 1993) and a number of UN General Assembly resolutions relating to the protection of the global climate for present and future generations adopted since 1990.[104]

nothing in there says anything about the right to "good and fullfilling life" and for rights "guarantee that people live healthy lives" because those things cannot be guaranteed because health cannot be dictated and ones levelto which one feels fulfilled is completely their opinion. you are just making up things that you feel you are entitled to for no other reason than your own childish greed.

Uhm, no. I just used the money example because you don't seem to have any empathy. Most people don't like to see others die due to emotions, since you don't care, I assumed you would care about money. I guess I was wrong there aswell.

Eh what do you think the conservation of the environment, development and education imply? ding ding ding you got it (or maybe not), good healthy lives, maybe even fullfilling. And childish greed? Wtf? yeah i'm greedy because i want all people to care about my forests, rivers and mountains that are there only for ME and only ME to use to my own selfish desires!! buahahahaha... seriously. If anything, thinking I can reproduce like a plague without even thinking of the consequences to the rest of the world is the childish and greedy thing.

It doesn't take a genius to realize most people who commit suicide have bigger problems than "not getting the newest toy."

Obviously when we live in a crappy culture that allows Madison Avenue to use inadequacy as a marketing strategy, kids are gonna commit suicide sometimes.

so the parents would be selfish because they would rather their kid live? losing a son or daughter isn't something people get over.

I wonder this has anything to do with modern kids unable to cope with problems, such as getting her mouth taped by her teacher.magicalclick

I think that's part of the problem, but the parents are more to blame for that since they're the ones responsible for making their children into weaklings who can't deal with everyday problems. Screw modern PC parenting where every kid gets a trophy and they are taught to believe nothing bad ever happens.

Thier forcing someone to do something for their own emotional benefit. I think it's quite obvious that that's selfish. You could try and improve the kid's life/perception of life but simply forbidding them is selfish.

More pressure (laws, education, businesses) -> more suicides.
More obfiscation of truth/less integrity in life -> more suicides.

I loled. Anyway, it's a shame this happened. It's too bad her friends didn't take it more seriously, that was probably her reaching out and taking one shot at not going through with it.

Her friends could've been more proactive. Schools nowadays should have metal detectors; otherwise people can sneak handguns and/or knives into the school without anyone noticing.

A person isn't going to kill himself/herself simply because someone else said a rude word or because they didn't get the phone they wanted. Perhaps there will be an issue like that which will send someone over the edge, but it's because there's something a lot deeper behind it. If someone is very self-loathing and believes bad things about himself/herself and someone else insults that person, it just validates their already-negative opinion of himself/herself.

Suicide is a very complex and serious issue. It should not be belittled. I am not someone who condemns suicide because I believe that it is your life and your choice, but I also will not encourage it and think that we should do all we can to make it easier so people can seek help if they want it. There's a lot of shame in seeking help, and if that were reduced, perhaps suicide rates would reduce. Most people don't actually want to end their lives - they just want the bad things or feelings to cease, but it's a lot harder to work on that.

Responses like "wah the kiddos didn't get a new phone/ she didn't go out with me" being the reason a teen killed themselves are so stupid. People are complex and there is much more to a person committing suicide other than some materialistic issue. Nobody in my entire school career committed suicide over trivial issues.

Well, the only person I knew who suicided was the son of a criminal and was treated very badly by his parents. He couldn't speak English too, so he had a hard time getting help. :( I think only the 'out of the ordinary' suicides would be publicized.

I'm just going to jump in here. I actually agree with you, as I would never want anyone close to me to commit suicide. But that IS for selfish reasons. It is because I don't want to feel bad. I don't want to live without them. Notice all the I's. So no, wanting someone to live is not a bad thing, definitely not, but that doesn't mean it isn't selfish.

Yeah but it's becoming more and more apparent that the younger generation is not being properly equipped to deal with problems in a rational manner.

punching someone in the nose in an angry rage is much different than in self defense

however, suicide rates have increased partly due to people not being able to handle pressure, or just not knowing who to turn to in life to talk to

its sad, but true

I'm curious. Does anyone know if Depression rates are increasing as well?

And if that is the case, could it be that people are too afraid to get the help they need because mental illness is frowned upon by society?

But isnt is much more accepted today than it was in the past to talk to a someone about stuff? Back in the day people wouldn't talk about anything deemed taboo or different like depression and being gay or whatever they kept it all hidden. I think some of the problems is TV and stuff like that. People get the idea that their life is so bad because its not like someone elses they saw on TV or someone on FB posting all their amazing pictures of whatever interesting stuff they are doing.

I would agree with this. Goes along with my post about the advertising industry playing off of low self esteem and feelings of inadequacy. That combined with peer pressure (even more so now with social networking) = depression.

I'd like to say so many things to the TC, but I'd get banned for all of them. I actually can't believe somebody would be so stupid as to say that people who commit suicide do so over being called a name once, or not getting what they want from their parents. Common goddamn sense, get some. People who commit suicide have dealt with physical, mental or verbal torture and harassment for a long time in the majority of cases. Many get beat up on a regular basis, verbally harassed every day or are victims of harassment in some form or another. People are harassed into wanting to kill themselves sometimes for nothing more than their religion, skin color, hair color or sexual orientation, or the clothes they wear. People don't kill themselves for no reason, they kill themselves because they can't deal with the constant harassment. I've tried to kill myself multiple times since the onset of my depression at age 8 following a traumatic experience. Since then I've dealt with a lot more difficult and traumatic ordeals, and acquired anxiety issues and social phobias. I thought every single day about wanting to die, and I still do. Is it because somebody called me stupid, or I didn't get what I want out of life? No, it's not. It actually makes me sick to hear a person say that, because it's painful to deal with being suicidal and depressed, especially for the long-term, and no matter how strong the person is, it will eventually get to them.

You make it sound like these teens actually have something to be miserable about. Most of these teen suicides are over issues they would get over ralitively quickly if they just gave it a chance. This kind of behaviour is typical of teenagers, though, they have a hard time making rational decisions. Any mature adult who goes through the same thing would look at the big picture and realise it's not a big deal. Kids killing themselves because someone called them ugly or their girlfriend dumped them would be hilarious if it wasn't such a tragic waste of life.

It actually makes me sick to hear a person say that, because it's painful to deal with being suicidal and depressed, especially for the long-term, and no matter how strong the person is, it will eventually get to them.XilePrincess
your experience doesn't necessarily reflect the experience of these teenagers that kill themseves. If you read about these suicides a recurring theme is bullying, which usually just amounts to some kid calling other kids names, or physical violence. Whatever it is, more often then not suicide is not the rational course of action by any stretch of the imagination. Teenagers are known for making bad decisions that lead to their deaths, and teen suicide is no different. They haven't even lived long enough to fully comprehend the scope of life, yet they already make decisions to end it. None of those situations of typical teen suicide victims you described couldn't be easily solved by contacting the right people, AVOIDING the wrong people, or just simply getting over it. You cannot have a more final solution then suicide, so why apply it to such temporary problems?

Most people try to suicide only to get attention The ones that talk about it all the time for exampleDarthkaiser

I don't think this is true. Sure, there are probably some people that attempt to commit suicide for some menial reason just to get attention, and you probably hear more about and from these people because, like you said, it is about getting attention for them, but I do not think they are the majority at all. In fact, I would assume they are a very small minority. Granted it might be more prevalent in some places.

Suicidal thoughts don't just come out of nowhere, they are usually caused by a serious mental illness. And it is something that people that are fortunate enough to never encounter couldn't possibly understand, yet they make generalizations like the ones seen in this thread. And this attitude is only making things worse.

And in the US suicide rates aren't just up among teens, but middle aged individuals as well.
