The horrible irony is that the girl actually risks being labeled as a sex offender... By her OWN PARENTS.
These are getting more and more common. I wonder if it's because the parents don't explain the risks or because the kids just don't care...

This is a fvcked up situation.. It basically is going to be punishing the victim.. The ban of child pornography is suppose to protect minors who cannot consent from clear abuse.. They are basically going to be blaming and charging the victim, some one who clearly did not know the full consequences of her actions.. Being 13 and all.. There is no good way out of this, because if the parents cover it up and are caught, they too are charged with child pornography related charges..
"What's that? Our daughter is doing something she shouldn't? Do you think we should be parents and teach her otherwise?"
"**** that! Call the police!"

IF anything I would charge the parents for negligence.. They gave her both a cell phone and a tablet at 13 with out proper supervision..

Bingo, the parents sound like non-participating morons for giving a 13 y/o cell phones and tablets and no supervision. Cops really had no place in this situation when it likely could have been handled by simply talking to their daughter.
This was the safest course of action for a family uncertain about how to handle this situation with their community in mind as well as the entire internet. Child pornography is a serious crime and the family approaching their sheriff opens communication about a number of things. First, they can alert law enforcement to this situation which can help expand on their data network which can help prevent child predators from taking advantage of this teenager and others like her. Secondly, this action shows cooperation with the law and agreement with the morality of our mainstream culture. To explain, hiding this can be considered a form of negligence, though it could also be asserted as protecting the reputation of their family with a skilled lawyer. Plus, the potential for this being on the internet can be huge depending on a number of factors such as the competency of the teenagers with computing devices and that increases with any young adults involved. Next, it allows individuals more experienced with combating child pornography the ability to intervene in this situation before it worsens thereby preventing any increased nasty situations from occurring with entire families. About that, though the media now knows about this incident, the privacy of the underage parties are respected thus the family is kept safe from social isolation as a result of deviancy. These youths have much to live for and this can help them.
More could be said if I were directly involved, yet I would likely not express it on the internet for privacy reasons anyway. This is the best I can do, for now.
The parents' decision was rash. I wonder if they ever investigated whether those boys were into something bigger. Sex is a sensitive subject and with the wrong management your daughter may get the wrong idea and stick to it forever. It would have been best if they just explained her the dangers of exploiting sex and sexual desires rather than further make her mind unstable by sending her to jail for a crime done out of mere stupidity.
I wouldn't do that to my daughter if I had one. This could greatly disturb her sexual life in the future.
Parents should never turn in their children for minor things....hell I can't say major things would make me do that. Nonetheless, they should have handled this themselves.

If the parents cared, they wouldn't have reported it. She's getting labaled to distributing chil pornograpghy

Hmm, why would any parent rat on their kid to the police and possible ruin that kids future forever since there is no statute of limitations on mention in a sex-offender register.
But with that said i get why this girl would send her own picture to boys to be more "cool" but acting like a central for other girls photos seem a bit strange.

First off officials even stated there are alternatives aside from the court system for the 13 year old girl. Next the parents reported it because of who was involved not just in accepting, but redistributing, child porn. Mind you some of them are legal adults. Next the options left to parents these days are next to nill but the consequences extremely high, liability or criminally.
You all say how this 13 year old girl is too young to realize or act in a responsible way but you idiots want the parents to trust their own freedom and plain liability of knowledge of a criminal child porn ring to "deal with it" like bad grades? What if the girl, you know, behaves like a 13 year old dumbass and uses all that to get what she wants from her parents?
Just so much... stupid. Really. Horribly stupid reactions to a proper one.

The parents did the right thing by reporting it, this sort of thing can be used by pedofiles or sex offenders and potentially put children at risk.

There was a couple were the boy was 18 and the girlfriend was 17. She sent him nude pictures and he got arrested for child pornography... What the **** is wrong with people. If the guy was anything else it would have been alright, but they were clearly together and parents shouldn't turn their fucking kid in because of this crap

That's a completely different case. THIS case involves a 13 year old girl being part of a child pornography ring in which 18 year olds are trying to bang her.

Maybe she will, maybe she won't. How would I know?
My point is, according to the article, this was more than a girl trading nudie pics with her boyfriend. It was essentially a child pornography ring in which minors (including their daughter) were being propositioned for sex by people up to and including adults. The girl might not deserve to go to jail over this, and in all likelihood she won't, but that whole thing needs to get stopped before someone's kid gets raped (which very well could have been their kid if they hadn't called the cops). The parents can spend all day talking to their daughter about how she shouldn't send nudie pics, but that does jack shit about the people who were trying to get in their daughter's pants. How exactly are the parents supposed to handle this on their own? Personally track down everyone who was involved in that child pornography ring and then break their legs? This is actually a job for the police, that's the kind of stuff that the police are supposed to handle, and they can't do that unless this stuff gets reported.
