I think something will come along. Just look at the past where we've had Indiana Jones (granted the 1st is the best one) and the always great Back to the Future Trilogy. We still have James Bond (though I'm not a fan) which has been around for quite some time now. Don't forget about Pirates of the Caribbean (ignoring the 2nd and 3rd movies) and the soon to be National Treasure trilogy.
Granted, I would like to see something new and on the same type of scale as the movies originally mentioned. For this reason I go back to watching Doctor Who, which with almost 50 years of mythology basically deserves to be mentioned alongside star wars.
Really, this year's been a bad year for movies, as there have not been any really great original films, so I wouldn't expect any grand epic to start soon. I feel like these type of epics should either start as a tv show or a book first since it's cheaper to produce just in case it doesn't take off as expected. After all, LOTR and HP started as books, which allowed for a lot of room to play with the source material to then focus on key points to make a more accessible movie for those who havn't read the books and don't care enough to actually know all the backstory and what not.
I'm personally pulling for the film adaptations of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, which supposedly are coming up in a couple years. raven_squadNO!!! As much as I used to love King's work, "The Dark Tower" did more to trash his name in my eyes than anything else he did. The end of that series was a major slap in the face to those of us who waited (and waited, and waited, and waited... 16 years of waiting) for him to finish that ******* thing. PLEASE leave it alone.
I'd much rather see David Edding's Belgariad/Mallorean adapted to the big screen: broad age appeal, characters you can relate to, and some nice battle scenes.
Even more preferable would be an original property (much like "Star Wars" was, once upon a time) to come along, with no expectations attached.
What I mean by "epic" is a huge believable fantasy universe/world.
It's been sad to say farewell to the last Harry Potter movie. We've had 8 Harry Potter movies, 6 Star Wars movies, and 3 Lord of the Rings movies. Is there any movie franchise as rich and epic in scope as these?
No other movie franchises has had such an influential impact to hollywood and the world as these movie franchises.
What do we look forward to now?

They haven't been made yet. Do you think people in the 1980s were expecting Harry Potter?
I think Hollywood is in an interesting position. Harry Potter is a huge series that appealed to both adults and kids. I've noticed that there have been a couple of attempts to make films out of well known kid's books. Not many have done well though. Look at Percy Jackson & The Olympians, The Golden Compass, Chronicles of Narnia, and The Seeker: The Dark is rising. The first Narnia film did well but they have been making less and less money as the series goes on. For whatever reason they haven't hooked people like the Harry Potter series did. The Hunger Games is getting a fair amount of hype. I only read the first book and I thought it was surprisingly pretty good even if the story is very similar to Battle Royale.
I think The Mortal Instruments might be pretty popular, but that book series isn't as well known as Harry Potter. Maybe a film adaptation could be more popular than the books, which would make people go out and buy the series.A bit like how more people know Game of Thrones because of the HBO show. A lot of people I know didn't know that series before the show came out. Maybe there might even be a fantasy or sci fi film epic that is an original concept not based on any existing book series. I find it interesting how Hollywood is trying to adapt tons of young adult books in hopes of finding the next big Harry Potter kind of success. You never know how popular the film adaptation will be. Look at The Golden Compass, that book series is fairly well known but I think the film was a flop.
Uhm, dood, don't forget Mass Effect.Just wait til Halo!
Also Robotech should also be pretty epic!

Explain reasons as to why it's epic, because I don't see anything epic about it.
Vampires vs werewolves?
Underworld - that is all.
