I started with the melodic death bands everyone starts with. I hated a lot of harsher bands at first, but Behemoth, Nile, Opeth (early stuff), and Anaal Nathrakh were the four much "harder" bands that I discovered at the time and could enjoy (don't know how I got into Anaal Nathrakh so early). I skipped thrash and the NWOBHM completely as a result, and ultimately ended up skipping the first wave of black metal as well.I started off with two bands in order to get into Death Metal, and that was simply Amon Amarth, and Deicide.
That was my stepping stone.
But even then Death Metal never turned me away when I first heard it, I loved the way it was composed along with the sound of it.
Black Metal was harder for me to get into, but once I found Bathory it simply paved the way for me...

That said Bathory is good, but they never really clicked with me. I can enjoy the music, but it's not something I'll voluntarily listen to. For me, it was the second I found Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Emperor's In The Nightside Eclipse that I got into black metal.
