[QUOTE="SPBoss"]And all the people saying eminem, he got killed in a freestyle by a londoner called skinnyman SuperSaiyanLink

Em's lost a few times in his life but I don't recall any londoner.

Its mostly just a rumor and can't really be clarified. But apparently, skinnyman jumped on stage and caught eminem off guard and Em was unable to respond

Seriously, Eminem is a legend and when it is all said and done he will be considered one of the greatest ever. Rakim, a pioneer of hip hop known for being the first to use internal ryhmes and complex literary devices has said Eminem is on of the greatest of all time.

I seriously think Joe Budden is real competetion for em though. Hes consistently put out incredible underground material multiple times every year for the past 5 years. His Mood Muzik mixtapes (all 4 of them) are considered by many to be better than most classic albums.

J Cole is THE best rapper right now. Friday Night Lights was the best mixtape I've listened to in a long while. Reminds me of how I was when I used to get every Drake mixtape, then he went to Young Money and ruined everything. Hes ok but he was doing way better before he blew up and signed with the worst record label possible. Also, Starlito (aka All-Star) is really good too.

J Cole can't come close to anything buddens done sense '05. Friday Night Lights was good, but buddens made 4 straight mixtapes better than that IMO. Budden has a song (three sides to a story) where he tells a story about a family and raps from each persons perspective and with every persons perspective you learn more about whats going on because not one person knows everything. Cole or Drake never came close to that. joey actually routinely subliminally disses rappers like drake and cole by making fun of there lyrics, saying "this is what the young kids like" an than he'll use a metaphor they would use like "its about to go down like bird s***". I feel like life is all over understand my math/ got on my knees, told God I had a plan, an he laughed/ I mean hours pass, no sleep, cowards get a slow leak/ shower twice, the whole week, a powerless control freak/ an dont even get me started on royce. I'm blazin MC's, at the same time amazing MC's/ Somehow MC's ain't that eye-brow raisin to me/

Hey 15-25 year old white kids, Eminem isn't as amazing as you think. Sorry to break it to you. I know you love the fact that he's a white rapper and all, but geez, he is nowhere near how he used to be.

Well he's better than most rappers now. Jay-Z is a joke now. 50 Cent is irrelevant and Kanye ain't far behind. Lil Wayne, Drake and Eminem are carrying the rap industry now.

I'm not saying that's the only reason people like him, but it seems like that has a lot to do with him being popular with the middle class white kids who can relate to him better.

If he was black he might not have sold as many records, but he would still be just as talented. Rakim mentions this in the video I posted on page 3. And as far as I'm concerned, Rakim's opinion>>>>all of our opinions combined regarding hip hop.

middle class white kids can relate with parents with drug addiction and living in violent communities? when em first came out everyone in the hood was playing his tapes non stop.

A lot more than just white people respect Eminem in my experience (I live in Nashville, think its full of rednecks, you're wrong, very wrong) Eminem has good word play and hes aggressive. That makes him good to a lot of people. It hasnt occurred to anyone I've ever had this debate with that maybe, just maybe, the way rap is now is better, to the people it appeals to, than old rap is. And there are a lot more people that like the new stuff than the old stuff. I honestly cannot listen to anything before like 2004. I just dont like it. The evolution that rap went through, the metamorphosis if you will, is what I like, And I like it a lot. Its not enough to warrant being a new genre, but this, to me, is what rap is.

Idk thats an interesting point but I still can't really understand how someone could prefer a song like Rick Ross' BMF to Biggie's Juicy, or Soulja Boy's crank that to Pac's changes. Hip hop was once about simple beats that emphasized clever lyrics and complex rhyme scheme. Now it seems like ever since the "southern takeover" hip hop has been more about "snap" beats, auto tune and less of an emphasis on meaningful lyrics. It was once about the struggle and hardships of growing up in impoverished neighborhoods and now its all about cars, sex, and money. Eminem became famous by battling his way up through the underground and getting in second place in the 97' rap Olympics, and Drake got famous by being on a teenage Canadian soap opera.

so you prefer people saying ish like "my minds fast like nascar" or "im a legend like acura" as apposed to real metaphors and originality? and also prefer everyone trying to sound exactly like whoever is currently hot so everyone's flow almost sounds exactly the same as opposed to everyone puroposely not biting someone elses style so they have there own sound. that's the real difference MC wise between 90's rap and 00's rap. In my experience the only people who prefer newer rap to older rap are women that just like shaking there booties at the club, or kids too young to even remember what it used to sound like or not even intelligent enough to understand alot of what the old school rappers were even really saying. Anyone can understand "Im the bomb like tick tick", or "Im a legend like acura" but it takes an intelligent person to decode "peace to cats who rock mack knowledge, knowledge this street astrologist, light up the mic with bars thats sick", or "slide they hatch back black, minds finesse em" The difference is rappers used to write songs only for people on there level on thinking, now they all write songs hoping to appeal to the masses. Where as many rappers in the 90s wrote songs only to appeal to a certain type of streetwise person in the ghetto with high intelligence and lots of life experience. Rappers now adays write there songs to appeal to 15 year olds in the suburbs with no life experience an they want all of them to like it so they taylor it for people with low intelligence.

in my experience most kids are just too young to even begin to comprehend that. I often will quote certain bars with metaphors in them from famous rappers in the 90s and most people will be dumbfounded and not even be able to understand everything thats being said, thats why Jay-Z said "I dumb down my lyrics an double my dollars" Jigga used to have so many bars back in the days with hidden meanings and double metaphors, it was sick cause every time you listen to a song again you would see more an it would make you wanna listen to it over an over again. his raps the past 10 years have been so simple catering to these new rap fans.

I dont prefer stupid metaphors, no. There are people rapping now that say things deeper than anything I've ever heard from any old rapper. I didnt say I prefered Soulja Boy either. When people make these "I dont see how you prefer" analogies, they always choose something top shelf for their side of the argument (Pac) and something they know even fans of the other side dont like at all (Soulja Boy). I prefer what its become when its at its finest, as opposed to how it used to be, at its finest.

pac lyrically never was the best, people in the struggle felt what he said though. i really wanna see or hear some bars from j cole that are lyrically impressive. ive heared its mixtapes and understand why people can think its complex, but its not even close. if most people understand whats being said lyrically it aint s*** IMO.

I know and its very upsetting. I just had this discussion with my roommates and most of them felt lil wayne is comparable to biggie. I'm only 18 and I understand that 2000's is for the most part awful compared to the old school stuff. Hell, I was only 4 when Pac died.

Wow im surprised it took three whole pages before someone brought up the matter of race.

The matter of race is relevant when it comes to Eminem though.

When people pretend that Eminem is the only good/meaningful rapper out there or "the only rapper I like", it's usually due to an aversion to black rappers.

People can flame me all they want, but I'm just pointing out the elephant in the room that nobody wants to see.

Yeah, almost all black hip hop fans respect Eminem's rhyming talent, delivery and lyrical skills. But the argument is not that only white people like Eminem. The argument is that Eminem's race is what causes people to elevate Eminem to ridiculous levels and dismiss other rappers.

Aesop Rock, I understand he doesnt have the smoothest voice, but it is unique and his lyrics are to kill for.

or Mac Dre before the "hyphy movement". He is your more "traditional" rapper (talking about drugs, women, etc) but the combination of often-serious lyrics with awesome beats is just great.

Kanye is an average MC, but to call him irrelevant is ridiculous. His new album is getting the best reviews of his career. It got 5 stars on Rolling Stone.

Also, Jay Z is actually still coming out with great songs (Empire State of Mind) while Eminem has that silly song with Rhianna.

Em's second verse is sick. He spits so fluidly, but hey your opinion is your opinion even if it's wrong. His work may have lost some of it's comical value, and maybe he's not as angry as he once was but he still uses word play better than most in teh business.

BTW, Lil Wayne is a joke. I find it sort of surreal that he makes so much money with his nonsense.

Li'l Wayne (Joking)

Immortal Technique is the best rapper of this decade, and I would consider him one of the better ones of the 90's even though he had one (amazing) album

I think Kid Cudi is dope as hell, his new album was different but still pretty cool.

Kanye is great too.

Nelly was very big when he first came out. Most people I knew were bumpin him everywhere, so I think it's only fair to mention him.

Eminem is obviously great, but I consider him to be a voice of the last generation (1996-2003)

Though they haven't released a full-length album yet, I would consider Chiddy Bang better than 90% of evryone else in the past 3 years. Seriously.

Ludacris was the best for a short while and is still great.

Andre 3000 is one of the best of this decade I believe, Outkast was killin' it for a long time.

Frankly, Jay-Z is the greatest rapper who ever lived. There is just no arguing against it.

Plus there are 3 people who absolutley have got to be an a greatest rappers list...

Jay-Z (of course)

Kanye West (imo 2nd best rapper)

Lupe Fiasco.

Zach DelaRocha from Rage Against the Machine

DudeNtheRoom
He's definitely better than most mainstream rappers, and I wouldn't even consider him a rapper... But best this gen imo is a tie between Eminem and Lupe Fiasco.
