This thread obviously only applies to Metallica fans.

Anyway, I see a lot of hate for the eponymous album, usually called The Black Album. What do you think of it?

My opinion on it is that it is a great album by itself without metallicas previous work. It's different, that's for sure, though different does not mean bad. Alot of the songs are catchy, and are still quality metal (In my opinion). It wasn't as good as Master of Puppets or ...And Justice For All, but Metallica changed every album (...And Justice For All sounds quite a bit different then Master of Puppets), though never as much as the jump to the Black album. It's not their best, but like I said, different doesn't make it bad.

However, I'm with everyone else that Load, Reload, and St. Anger were not very fun to listen to (even though Garage Inc. was pretty cool). I can't wait to see what they do with Rick Rubin (their newest album has been called the "missing link between and justice for all and the black album").

So yeah, that's my opinion. What did everyone else think of the Black album?

EDID: I just found out that Jay Z has a black album, hence the title change.

Metallica (yes, I call it by it's real name) was the first step to sell out. It's perfect for the casual listener though (which is not me)

I don't know. Compared to Justice for All, it sounds a little generic.

I think you are exactly right. Metallica did change their style of music a great deal with the Black Album, however, itis still very quality music. Most people say that they only like pre Black Album Metallica, and that's unfortunate as it's definitely an excellent album. I will admit that I like Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice for All more, but to say that the Black Album sucks is an atrocity.

That's what I mean though. They definitely changed on this album, though it didn't turn into an alternative album. It was still metal (well, most of them were), though to a lesser extent. I can see why the hardcore metal fan would feel letdown, though at this point, I don't think Metallica had quite sold out (Load and Reload took care of that).

And I also think that the album went downhill after the first half or so.

I think it's boring as hell. I can't make it through without wanting to put on Justice.

Generic mid-tempo metal.

The black album is not metal, and it's so vastly different from previous work they should've released it under a new band name. But even then I dislike it, it's mostly been played to death, but also the songs, they don't have the impact as they used to. They botched it.

But of course I have it since it's the closest you can get to metal and most girls (who aren't into metal in the first place) like it. It's useful in that sense.

Yes, Metallica lostthe interests of alot of its "hardcore" and dedicatedfans when they made the Black Album. It was definitely meant to be more radio friendly and geared towards attracting casual listeners. Many people thought that they were abandoning the music style that their loyal fans knew and loved to listen to.

I like it, though for definitive listening I go with Master of Puppets. I would have liked if they had kept with this style, instead of trying to chase after the sucess they got with this.

I don't hate it, but it's what started Metallica's decline into "Sell-Out-Hood". It's more the "casual" Metallica. I miss old Metallica.

I understand that the music styles of many bands change over time. I was just trying to say that many metal fans did not like Metallica's change in style from ...And Justice for All to the Black album. It doesn't matter if their lives changed and their music changed as a result. The fact is, no matter what caused their change in style, many people didn't like it. Some people, including me, felt the change between the two consecutive albums was too extreme. It seems as if an album should have been between the two to link the styles, which is why some have described the new Metallica album (out next month) as "the true link between the two albums."

I would say that St. Anger is a lot better than everything before it...Not a metal fan (excuse the screenname), but liked the alternative / Godsmack sound of St. Anger...

And they know that how? People change and their music changes with them. More than a few bands have changed their style because their moods and lives change.

How do they know that?

Um, two words

"THE PRODUCER"

Thats how they know. Compare the speed, the heavy focus on instrumentals, etc. of pre-Black album Metallica to anything after it and including the Black album. Completely different music.

The Black album is full of shorter songs (songs appropriate for radio), with choruses that can be remembered and repeatedly over and over again. The songs are much more melodic too.

Its one of the easiest albums for a non-metal listener to enjoy because its really just a slight extension of hard rock.

Tell someone to try Metallica and give them the Black album. Then tell them again to try some Metallica and give them Kill em All or Ride The Lighting. They will have a completely different opinion of the band and might not even believe its from the same band.

The black album is not metal, and it's so vastly different from previous work they should've released it under a new band name.

2FacedJanus

See, this is a sentiment that I can't get behind.

It's a song by Metallica, so it's a Metallica song. I can't support the idea that all the songs by a band have to sound similar. Neil Young's Mirrorball sounds a LOT different than Harvest Moon. Both were great albums with a VASTLY different sound. Foo Fighters' The Colour And The Shape was a LOT different than Echoes, Silence, Patience, And Grace. Siamese Dream was Vastly different than Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Kid A was vastly different than OK Computer, and I could keep on going all day long.

I don't really agree. I mean, some people call them greedy, but I don't see how it's greedy to want to be paid for your job. Whats wrong with getting paid for wanting to get paid for what you do? Though then again, you can look at it a completely different way, in that Metallica is alrealdy rich enough, and should focus on fans now... well either way.

It was the last album they made that was any good, how could you hate it. Metallica died with the black album imo
