2Pac without a doubt no competition. No one ever has been able to write such meaningful and deep lyrics.

2. Crooked I

So you think Crooked I is the second greatest next to Tupac? If you do, I find it interesting and would want to know why.

I was mocking Mkavanaugh because every other post he makes in Off The Books is about Crooked I...

Ballet is one of the cruelest things a person can do to their body. Do not say someone is not hard because he learned how to dance.

I like a lot of the names I have seen but as I have grown older, rap is a complete joke and junk. All these guys are just full of it and sing about BS making themselves sound hard when really these guys are like 5'5" and the only way they can take you out is with their pose. Everybody talks 2pac but what did everybody learn from 2pac? That he gets around and treats women like trash buuuuut Ladies Keep your head up, lol. it is sad when all you can sing about is violence. Worst even that these guys have the right to call themselves pimps and players but the only way they can get a woman is by throwing cash at her at the strip club, lol. Going to the strip club and giving a woman money is not player at all, its sad more than anything. Being a player is getting a woman on your own means. Rappers are ghetto and definately have no knowledge to learn from. All rapper sing about is themselves and selfishness. Lets not forget that orginality of their beats does not exsist since they rip off old songs.

I cant believe nobody mentioned Run DMC.

Ok, compare Hit Em Up to, Keep Ya Head Up, he goes from a good message to wanting to kill Biggie. How is that not fake?

^^ Seriously, guy? Some of what you say has merit, it really does. The bolded underlined statement is completely ignorant, and I believe you know it. You need to move beyond listening to just "Gangster Rap", because that is what I believe you are referring to, and true, a majority of that contains violence and langauge that is often derogatory towards women.

You seem to not take notice of the many rappers that are not negative, or those that have moved away from a negative style they once adopted. Andre 3000 is a great example of the latter. His songs have meaning and are often fairly thought provoking if you truly listen and attempt to understand the lyrics. What about Common, Lupe, Enimen (Many of his songs have a meaning behind the violence. While some, I believe, are not violent at all), Nas, even Young Dro (His names betrays him)? There are many more. Do not say there is nothing to learn. Try not listening to the radio, remember they play what people want to hear, and many people like to hear that kind of music. Instead, try listening to albums most have truly emotional songs, or try listening to rappers with positive messages.

If it seems I attacked you, I apologize. But I believe it is unfair to jugde rappers, as a whole, without having taking the time to listen to their songs which show that there is a thought process behind many rappers.

But, I will concede many rappers are jsut frankly full of crap. Soulja boy, E-40, Hurricane Chris, Huey.

Ok, compare Hit Em Up to, Keep Ya Head Up, he goes from a good message to wanting to kill Biggie. How is that not fake?

They are two different songs. He and Biggie had personal problems, they genuinely disliked each other, either that or they knew how to create enough tension to sell records. Please explain how you moved from ballet to saying that the messge in 2 different songs conflict.

It is not fake to tell someone the equivalent of "Keep ya head up", and then curse at another individual. I am pretty sure you, and everyone else in existence, do the same thing all the time.

Plus, doesn't every artist do this. Whether it is rap or some other genre of music. R&B, for example. People often sing of losing a lover, then in another song on the same album will sing a love ballad to someone they have supposedly been with, and will love forever. Is that any more fake? Or Rock, where someone wants to consistently party in a song. Then again they will have a love ballad, meant for some women. Is that fake?

People sing different songs for different reasons, to different people.

I think LL Cool J is one of the greatest of all time. I mean him and Russel simmons are mainly responsible for the elements in rap. "Don't Call it a come back, i been here for years"A_c_E

There it is. Took me most of the thread to find it and it's the guys third post. But a good one.

LL Cool J has staying power. He has been around since the Run DMC days and is a major influence on how rap progressed. Sure, he doesn't come out with new stuff very often but the fact is he is still known. His lyrics are at the center of what I think of when I think of rap. And he hasn't had to reinvent himself. He is pretty much the same for the most part. And his music still has relevance and appeal.

It's really all up to personal preference. I have a set number of rappers who I always buy their CDs. The Game, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Young Jeezy, T.I., Ludacris, Common and Nas.

Reasonable Doubt (Greatest album ever made)

Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life

The Dynasty (Album gets hated on so bad)

The Blueprint

The Blueprint 2

The Black Album
