I just took a Google Street View tour of the neighborhood I spent the first 18 years of my life. MY CITY WAS GONE! Everything's changed. Even the school across the street from my house that I spent my elementary years in is in ruins (I was in the last 6th grade class before it closed down in 1989). There are houses where I never thought they'd put houses. The forest is gone, completely cleared. My old house has been completly remodeled and *gasp* the driveway paved. The barn on the hill is gone. There are trees where there used not to be trees and no trees where there used to be trees. It's not the same place.

The old arcade I used to hang out at is gone. The grocery store where I had my first job as been tore down and a bigger grocery store built in it's place, but oddly facing 90 degrees from the first store. There's a bridge where my dentist used to be. There's a McDonalds where my friends house used to be and a Walgreens at another.

You can never go home again. Oh, time, you cruel **** you.

Maybe that's why music is so nostalgic: a song never changes.

I know most of you aren't as old as I, but do you have any old haunts that have fallen to the steady march of progress?

We will all get old, even the babies being born right now, and we will all eventually be buried back into the Earth.

I hate that too... Looking back at anything that reminds me of my child hood is kinda depressing, because while I'm content with where I am right now, I wish things could be as simplistic as they were back then. Oh, and as for old mementos of mine, there's my old boxing mitts that I dug up recently that I used to wear when I took Muay Thai in my younger years :( Also a pic of my first home and a piece of a baseboard that I broke off when we moved so I'd have a bit of home with me no matter where I went :P Man... I miss being a kid sometimes.

Say what you will, but the hardest part about getting old in my opinion is balding.

You should have a lot more on your mind than worrying about balding when you get older no pun intended.

It breaks my heart a little sometimes to see the places I love and people I love ( especially people ) undergo a change or practically just ...cease to exist. I'm always grateful for the memories however, and I'm looking forward to going back to the areas of my favorite hang-outs and pointing them out to some younger generation, telling them what used to be there. My parents, older family members and friends do this with us and they will always get some faraway twinkle of nostaligia in their eye whenever they relate to me their stories. I'll probably end up as sappy as that and I don't mind. :?

The hard part about getting old is seeing kids enjoying their spring breaks and summer vacations without a care in the world. Not some missing street.

A few times I've been by the house I lived in until I was 7. Back then there were 2 houses next to ours then a big dirt patch and a field. Now there are a ton more houses and a grocery store. It just seems so radically different. It doesnt make me feel old, just that the world is always growing.

For me the hardest part about getting older is the physical limitations that have begun to impact me. Until I was 30, I felt I had no physical limitations whatsoever. Since that time, I have had to change my diet (slightly), stretch, and eliminate basketball from my list of favorite sports to play. I suppose that is minimal in the grand scheme of things, but I wonder what further limitations will be down the road. I also wonder about keeping my teeth when I turn 65. Ten years ago, these things would not have been on my mind.

Man that sounds bad...I thought about checking out googles street view of my old elementary school... I think I'll do otherwise now. Actually I already did osmething like that, a couple of weeks ago I looked at the old church my family used to go to as a kid, google maps had pictures of the interiors and MAN! was that church small. I remembered it like it was some sort of vast cathedral. What a letdown!

I think I know now not to EVER dig up the past, seems to always have bad results.

You know you're getting old when you're called 'mister' 'sir' 'ma'am' or 'Dear'. Then you know you're getting on in the years.

You guys shouldn't worry about loss of function, the way it goes for most people, you start to value other things more then bodily function, me for instance, I like to paint alot and I know with each passing year I'll get better and better, in my old age I'll probably even be at my peak! It will be like that for a lot of you. You'll start valuing metaphysical things so much more!

Nostalgia and reminiscing are the hard part of getting old. That and having to conform to responsible adulthood.

It absolutely pains me I can't go back to being a kid or stay this young forever. 23 isn't really a kid, but I can still act young and play sports without any complications. It just sickens me to know that in maybe 15-20 years I can't do this stuff anymore. I guess if I keep myself in good shape I can still play sports, but just not with the young step I have now. Simply put, I don't want to grow up or change.

For most people I think time acts like a filter for the bad so you only remember the good which is why I think most people miss their childhood. For me, I still remember the bad. I actually made myself remember it when I was 15. I was being bullied at school and I was sat in the corner crying. Nobody came to check if I was ok so I wrote "Phil, always remember this pain. Don't miss your youth when you're old" inside my school book and still have it to this day.

I would actually be thrilled to see some change in my old home town. That sordid little burg has been locked in time since the time I was born. But if you ask me, the hardest part about aging is the joint pain.

that is horrible but learn that it will happen sometime in ur life. my neighborhood is changing. when i was like 5 or something liek that behind my house there use to be just dirt there. people use to ride dirt bikes and quads. around 1999 they started building houses there. recently, they started to take down the woods that are right down the road. they did it secretly so people wouldn't be a tree huger.

My town changed completely too in the past 5 years. I haven't left my town my whole life, but since the beginning of middle school my town has changed completely.

I find it kind of cool, how they changed stuff so much, so fast.

A lot of places have changed in my long lifetime (not to mention the people who are gone) but the places I was especially sad about losing were

-an old abandoned summer camp (my dad went there when he was a kid) that I used to play in (scary) was eventually torn down and is now a subdivision

-a beautiful 19th century school I once attended was left to sit and rot for years while the developer and heritage preservationists fought over it until it finally burnt down

I think the hardest part about getting older is losing touch with the people you thought you would be close to forever. A lot of people I used to be super close to, I haven't talked to for 3 or 4 years, and it hurts sometimes. I mean, I'm happy where I am, but sometimes I wonder who I would be if I hadn't lost touch with my best friend, or if I hadn't gone to a different high school than my 8th grade crush, etc., etc.
