For what it's worth, The Hobbit has garnered a 70% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 27 reviews. Granted, this is bound to change between now and the film's release on the 14th, but normally RT scores for movies with early reviews start high then gradually decrease, although anything is possible. Plus a 70%, even in the preceding weeks would be considered low when compared to the LOTR trilogy, which is undoubtedly what many critics and fans are bound to do (perhaps even subconsciously) once they see the new film.

What are your thoughts?

Makes sense. It's a third of a short book that starts out slow.

This movie is one part of a whole, rather than a complete product in and of itself. I don't think any of the reviewers are really taking that into consideration. The only way to accurately judge this movie is in relation to the other 5 (LOTR + the 2 other Hobbit movies).

I don't think they did that with Fellowship or Two Towers, those were each part of a whole as well.

It's true, and I think that's fair game. A movie, even part of a larger story or series, needs to be able to stand on it's own.

Exactly, I mean would you be able to defend any of the Star Wars prequels? Better example, Return of the Jedi?

Just because of the score? You're not even gonna see them in case you disagree?

They should have divided the book in 2 movies, not 3. This may be the cost of that.

My thoughts exactly. I read IGN's review and they said the first hour is incredibly slow.

Its running time approaches three hours. If the first three hours aren't enough time to establish anything substantial, then its unlikely 6 more hours are going to do anything to change that...

The Hobbit isn't for the general audience. It's for fans who love middle earth.

Peter Jackson took all details written in Lord of the Ring's appendices and added them in the next three films, so we're seeing a lot of back story, including adventures that Gandalf went on outside of the Hobbit's story line.

So for a general movie goer, this is going to feel like a lot of padding, but for as someone who loves everything about middle earth and just want to see the world come alive on screen, will really enjoy experiencing all of that.

It's going to be a long movie, sure you want to be a loud packed theater?

I'm actually going to wait a few days and try to catch an near-empty afternoon screening.

a 70% on Rotten tomatoes is still a good movie, why make movies like games and only see what gets above 80%. Sure it may not be LOTR, but it's still better than most of the crap in theaters nowadays.

Wow....people use to all the time tell me the correct tense is "couldn't care less" when I accidently say could and yet I've seen about 10 comments all saying COULD instead of couldn't and no one corrects them.

I give up....

It's just a pet peeve of mine when someone says one thing and people correct him/her or talk back at them for the comment and yet someone says the exact same thing in another thread and no one does anything about it.

I mean it was definitely flawed and I don't consider it a Bond movie, but as an action movie it was pretty fun. Much better than the previous two.

Regardless, it was released as an individual movie so it's getting judged as an individual movie. That's as fair as fair can get. After the entire trilogy has been released, any reviewer can go back and review the trilogy as a whole. But that's not how the trilogy is being presented, so that's not how the trilogy is getting reviewed right now.

I actually like Rotten Tomatoes. The way they calculate their "score" makes that score very often entirely unrepresentative of how good or bad people are saying a movie is. The result is this actually encourages me to read the reviews and actually see what people are saying rather than just lazily going "it only got a 70%, so it must be mediocre".

generally, i find that rt is a good indicator of what i'm going to like. but in this case? meh. the hobbit is perhaps my favourite book i've read, so i'll probably love it whether it has positive critical reception or not.

Weren't you the guy who recently thought critics bashed on a movie because it had religious themes, when you could have simply read the reviews and seen that that wasn't why they bashed the movie at all? Or furthermore, that despite the exceptionally low RT score, that most of the people giving it unfavorable reviews weren't even saying that it was all that bad? I hate hate hate that whole "I think for myself" cliche, because it's mostly bull$***. People don't exist in a vacuum. They don't just decide to see a movie because they're thinking for themselves. They listen to word of mouth, decide that a trailer looks good (aka, trusting the opinion of the people whose job it is to convince people to spend their money on crap), etc. We don't "think for ourselves" when we decide to watch a movie in the first place. We look at trailers, and lord knows that those trailers are specifically designed by the marketing department to convince us that $*** is gold. We listen to word of mouth, and hear what our friends are saying about the movies they just saw. Any decision to see ANY movie is not an entirely independant decision, because it's almost always based on some information which otherwise wouldn't have got our asses in the seat. Hell...is there anyone in the world who isn't aware that Lincoln is a Spielberg flick? Probably not, because Spielberg's name gets asses in seats. If his involvement wasn't an asset, then the movie would have either been directed by someone else (or not made at all) or marketing would have done their damndest to downplay his involvement. That's also not a bad thing. And anyone who wears the "I only think for myself" badge as a sign of pride just plain doesn't get it. Movies are visual art, and art is inherently about COMMUNICATION. Granted, reading reviews is not as good as DISCUSSION, because reviews are one-way communication. There's no feedback. However, reviews do one thing for sure...they give insight into someone else's interpretation. And no, that is not a bad thing. The review might SUCK, the reviewer might stink at watching movies and communicating his thoughts about him, but it's STILL allowing onesself to listen to things from a different perspective. And that is not a bad thing. That is a good thing. That's being receptive to new ideas, rather than choosing to live inside one's own head because it's comfortable there. What is the deal with this whole idea that one becomes enlightened by living inside a box?

Ya sorry, but I didn't read any of that rant. Whatever it is, it's wrong.

It's going to be a long movie, sure you want to be a loud packed theater?

I'm actually going to wait a few days and try to catch an near-empty afternoon screening.

Yes, I am absolutely sure.

Good man. Midnight releases are always fun.

I'm not wasting my money, I'm just gonna wait until all three hit the home market.

Just because of the score? You're not even gonna see them in case you disagree?

The score is not the issue, it's the fact that they are trying to pimp us with 3 films when really it should be 2!!! @Tigerman950

It's not just The Hobbit.

The movies also cover the 6 Appendices that were published along with Return of the King.

Blue-Sky

Pretty much.

My thoughts exactly, I can't wait to see the movie because I want to see all the details and backstory.

Really? That's what we're doing with a tragedy?
