I seriously think I would stop using the internet if this happened. I mean, this is disgusting.

LINK

My question is, would we have to pay for a service provider (i.e. AT&T or Comcast) AND subscribe to every site we use?

How do you guys feel about this?

If I would have two pay twice just to use a website like GS, I'd definitely stop using it. That's just ridiculous.

How can you charge for the Internet? Say you are hosting a website on your own server. How does that work? Who does the money go to?

Doesn't sound like anything to be worried about. I mean, there's already game sites where you can pay to get a few extras but it's optional.

your ISP will probably make some kind of inclusion offer that covers the extra expenses, you just pay a higher monthly rate. No one will think much of this as soon as it is implemented. It will be like having a fixed data plan on your cellphone.

It would really depend on the price, content I'm getting etc. I can see a positive side to it though, I would finally have no choice but to...

Yes but according to the article, it will become a requirement. Of course, I got this from the internet, but it is a definate possibility.

I would maybe pay to use wikipedia if it were really cheap but that would be about it.

Internet sites needing a price equals seriously bad idea.

I would like to let them try. It will be a huge fail if they try. If I have to pay for each website I go to, then I am done with the internet. Ask.com  charging? I am pretty sure Google already has them covered 10,000 to 1 on users.

Also, how will this help the economy out at all? A lot of jobs require internet usage at times. Not ever company out there is going to pay per website. We pay our T.V providers and get the channels. We do not pay to watch channels, only a few exceptions such as HBO movie channels and such. We pay our internet providers and get our internet usage. We should not pay for websites except for the exceptions such as memberships or upgrades.

This is one man's opinion. Not going to happen to most sites. Say ESPN. They make plenty of money from their network & ads on the site, there's no reason to charge for their content.

Its a disgusting concept, how greedy can people be? I don't think it will pass, I really hope this never happens...

Arrg, I simply cannot believe how greedy some people are. "Har Har Har, I make $100 000 a minute but that is not enough Har Har Har! Lets charge those hard working lower and middle class folk more so that I may make $250 000 a minute instead! They don't need all that money anyway, I mean, they don't have to pay the expenses of a private jet after all! Har Har Har!"

Not going to happen. Granted...the man has done incredible things for the media world in his career...but the internet is a completely different animal. If sites that were once free, decide to charge, while at the same time not offering anything more than they offered before, or that you can go and get elsewhere for free; that site will lose its customer base and die.

The internet doesn't work like other forms of media...it's not like a cable tv subscription. The beauty of the WORLD wide web is that you can go anywhere and find anything without being limited to the "channels" that you are currently paying for.

Nation-specific regulatory measures may be a different story sadly...

Impossible, everyone nowadays uses the internet as a major resource for what we do today. I highly doubt that human society can progress even further without it.

Go ahead. I'll just download it all off of my newsgroups, which I already pay for.

Seriously, though. This will never happen. People will just stay away from those pay sites and get the free stuff like they already do.

Personally I can't see this happening. There are websites all over the internet that charge for "premium service or content" Gamespot being one of them. That said the benefits of paid membership for most sites isn't worth the price of admission. Were Gamespot to start charging you per visit, or to access the sites content people would abandon the site in droves and head to a site that isn't charging. The internet will always be free because people won't stand for having to pay for it.

I don't know if they are still around but back around 2000 I know there were a lot of internet providers that charged you by your usage not a monthly fee but in this age of internet gaming, streaming video, and rich web content they would have to offer extremely competative rates to sway people away from the monthly fee model that just about everyone is using.

Paying attention to that kind of article reminds me of those chain e-mails I used to randomly get that said that hotmail was going to force it's users to pay (unless you forward this e-mail to ten of your friends). I didn't believe that because I knew it was stupid to think so and it would be stupider for Microsoft to even try to do so. The same applies to any attempt anybody might make at making the internet "a paid system".

Eh, whatever. For better or for worse, people will just flock to whatever is free like they do now. As long as net neutrality is enforced for ISPs, I don't think this guy knows what the hell he's talking about.
