When I was young (let's say 5, or possibly 6), I liked to wear my socks to bed. My Dad said it was bad for me, and that my feet needed to "breathe" as he put it. He said that I shouldn't wear the same socks for so long at a time because it was generally unclean. I ignored him and his reasonable information and continued to wear the socks to bed all the time. Even going so far as to take them off when I got in bed (because he'd check to see if I was wearing them), and then getting OUT of bed later and putting them back on in the night.
Finally, in order to convince me to stop once and for all, my father LIED to me and said that if I continued to wear my socks to bed, my feet would suffocate, die, and finally rot off in the night. He told me that if I didn't do as he said, one morning I would wake up with nothing but empty bloody socks and no feet.
Epilogue - Not only did it work wonders and keep me from wearing my socks to bed at the time, but I continued to do so until the embarrassing age of fifteen under the subconscious pretense that my feet were in mortal danger should I wear my sock too long.
So, did your parents ever lie to you when you were younger to get you to do (or to stop) some activity or other?
