It's still a MacBook, and MacBook's are the best laptops I've seen.

That's because they're pretty.

They run OS X, have a really nice keyboard, an amazing trackpad, an iSight camera, a very good looking screen... and they do indeed look very attractive in general.

[QUOTE="shoeman12"]nope, no optical drive, bad tiny hard drive, can't add more ram, can't replace your own battery, and its a mac. you pay a couple thousand when you could get a windows based laptop that you can customize that has much better specs for a fraction of the cost.Oborozukiyo
Actually the hard drive (ssd version) is pretty nice for a laptop and i wouldn't really put this thing into that category of Laptop, it's like some new type of computer with all it's wirelessness.

new type of computer?? its a laptop.. only not nearly as good and costs more.

Surely computers should be judged on being the best used and not the best seen :)

That's great. But for what they're saying the price is(1700$) and to have that stuff removed so you can make it tinier ain't cutting it. I don't have to carry a laptop around and I never will. I'll never have the kind of job where I need to carry a laptop around, so the Air being nice and comfy for a long walk with a laptop...is...yeah....

Besides, it sounds like a gimped computer all around. Pass.

It doesn't totally seem like a laptop though with it's missing dvd/cd drive, it's like a super PDA or something.

Adding the solid-state harddrive costs an additional $1000.

Actually, I was a bit surprised.

Because it's probably the only component on the damn thing that isn't obscenely overpriced when compared to equivalent hardware currently on the market. A 64GB SSD averages quite a bit more than $1000 from what I've seen.

I thought they were crazy when they removed floppy drives from computers, but I was wrong. I'm more disappointed by the removal of firewire from the Mac Book Air than optical drives.

Just so you know the optical drive is available as an add-on via USB for $99. It looks cool and I will tell you right now that quite a lot of people will buy it. Because some people don't care what the price is and want a nice light weight Mac. I personally will pass on it, because it doesn't meet my standards. I'm more a business type...

It doesn't have a CD drive because it's meant to be an ultra-portable notebook. People who choose portability as the number one criteria for their computer are likely to value portable media as well, like USB thumb drives or, heck, the Internet. This isn't the kind of computer that peope who lug around a lot of CDs are going to consider buying.

That said, I still think it's lame.

It only has a single USB port. Have an external HDD? An optical mouse? Flash memory? You'd be plugging/unplugging these things constantly.

Having to carry around USB peripherals for optical drive functions totally defeats the purpose of the Air being lightweight in the first place. Sacrificing the most basic of computer hardware components for the sake of being "lightweight" is ridiculous. Especially with a device that costs so much.

A USB hub will allow them to attach multiple devices when they are home. The computer has not been designed for people who use all of those peripherals on a daily basis. The computer weighs next to nothing. Students and businessmen can take it with them and use word processing, excel, etc. just fine.

A businessman? Maybe. But Apple doesn't cater to this crowd, so it's unlikely.

A student? They'd probably go for something cheaper with more features. Espcially if they're using it as a desktop replacement.

Most notebooks are just as portable as the Air, they merely weigh a couple extra pounds. It's not like you're lugging around 20 pounds or something..notebooks are they're extremely portable and light as it is. Air's shaving off of 1 or 2 pounds at the sacrifice of so many features is completely unecessary.

Get a normal, fully-featured notebook. As an added bonus, most other notebooks won't snap in half when your cat jumps on them. Want a portable Mac? Go with the Macbook Pro. Nobody is going to buy an Air because nobody needs one.
