They put metal wires in the flag because they did not want the pictures to show a completely draped flag.
That doesn't explain why it's rippled :|
See the rod along the top edge of the flag (which is why the top edge of the flag is straight)?
This is a telescoping rod. It extends, like the antenna on an old boombox. It got stuck and they were not able to extend it all the way.
This means that the rod is SHORTER than the entire length of the flag.
That makes the flag have ripples.
