[QUOTE="Taylor_B"]Eh, when I think of "sport," I think of being on a team interactively working against a team. Cheerleading doesn't fall under that...but that's my opinion. I've never understood why anyone with physical ability would choose to do cheerleading over school sports like soccer or basketball.Sajedene
I did both. And not all sports involve teams let alone interactively working against another team at that exact time.

I said what I think of when I think of "sport." Eesh, you don't have to jump all over me because I don't like cheerleading. I said it was my opinion. I'm not into golf, either (for the same reasons as cheerleading).

Cheerleading did not start that way, though. If you go back to the roots of cheerleading, they were bluntly placed in games to help cheer their appropriate teams. There was no such thing as competitions just for cheerleaders at the time.
I'm not saying I support the idea of cheerleading being overlooked by most people, I'm just saying it's a fact. I'm sure you've gotten that idea by now especially with the amount of people in this thread alone who oppose it as a sport. I'm not one of those people.

As for the competitions that you mentioned, I think it's good that cheerleaders are getting that spotlight now and being seen more as a sport. People are going to still debate about cheerleading, but it's slowly being more accepted.

I wouldn't say bluntly placed... they've been around for ages in the collegiate field. Competitive cheerleading has been around for a few decades now. I get that the odds are against me in this forum (I mean come on it is friggin GS/OT lol) but knowing that I have at least helped give a little enlightenment to some makes that much of a difference to me.

Well it's good you're being positive about it. :)

There are a lot of things in today's society that just aren't wildly accepted (Races, sexual orientation, gender roles, etc.) still, but to me, things are slowly progressing... At least in some parts of the world.

But not in OT :P

Cheerleaders can go *bleep*. I don't like cheerleaders, they all act superior to every other girl. (yeah, I'm generalizing, so what? Sue me..)

I don't understand the point of cheerleading. I know that can be said about ANYTHING (music, art, other sports, languages, science, etc.), I'm well aware, so don't even try to say that to me. I just...don't understand the existence of cheerleading. I'm not saying that it's not a sport, but I don't get why people don't just do dancing or gymnastics.

I mean, yeah, at a school game or something it's nice to have some enthusiasm (this is not limited to just cheerleading, however -- pep band, etc. is JUST as important), so whatever, no complaints there. I mostly just don't understand the point of these ridiculously overblown cheerleading competitions. What's the damn point? Why can't you just do gymnastics or dance? Cheerleading incorporates those sports anyway. I just don't see the point in having a competition of who can cheer the best and come up with the best routine. Why can't you just do a dancing or gymnastics competition?

But whatever. I guess it's better than doing nothing at all with your life. I'm not one to judge, really.

My thoughts exactly. If you want to do dance and do acrobatic stunts then why not join a dance team or do gymnastics.
