How come it's ok for black people to use it all the time but it's considered racist when a white man calls a black man with it, that's something i'll never get? didn't this word represent oppression and racism against the african american community back then so why still use it? i think this word should just cease to exist.

Because people are idiots. And they think being in a group or a clique gives them the right to say whatever they want without getting away with it. I'm not being racist because this is the case for many other scenarios.

Fat Joe says it more than anyone I've ever heard of, and he's hispanic. It isn't just blacks that use it.

But yeah, I don't like the word either. It's used too much these days.

Yeah, I don't get why they say it to each other but when someone that's not black says it they get pissed. My neighbor is white and he says pretty much a lot, and his black friends and his black cousin really don't care if he says "the word".

this gets discussed every couple of weeks and eventually gets locked. It doesn't matter if black people use it or not... the fact is, if you have any shred of human decency, diplomacy, and respect, you should be intelligent enough to know that it is one of those few words that really should not be used in conversation.

It's like, how come a woman can say "Typical Man" when he can't find something in the house, but it's not allowed when a guy says "Typical Woman" when she does something like cries about it being cold out?

I hate double standards.

Here's a good example:

At my local ski mountain, they have a day called "Women's Day" where only women can go skiing/snowboarding. I'm fine with that, give them a day. But how come we're not allowed a men's day? The mountain tried it once (after the women's day was created), and women basically went out of their way to go skiing, saying that they can't be kept off of a mountain because of chauvinistic men.

It's ridiculous.

Iono... It's just something they call each other inside their culture to represent being close...

I'm white, but I'm great friends with several black people, and they don't mind at all when I say it to them casually. It's all about the level of how close you are to the person.

Well said.

I don't care for the word either. I guess like some words that people were once offended by, they decided to take it back and use it themselves. It's been around for ages.

The reason (not trying to be racist) there are a lot of black criminals, thiefs, gangs, mobs, etc. is because of us. If we didn't make them slaves back then, there wouldn't be so much crime. So it is mostly out fault why most black people hate white people and the crime and stuff.

Enough with this "whaaah! Why do black people get mad when I call them offensive names?" crap.

Dude, say what you want to say. When black people call me that word, I tell them to STHU. When white people call me that word, I tell them to STHU. They then have the option to either STHU, or to continue making racial slurs towards me when they know that I find it offensive.

So quit worrying so freaking much about what other people do. If YOU really want to call black people that word, then what's stopping you?

I'm hispanic, great friends with many black people, some that use it and some don't. Alot of my black friends don't care if I use the word, but I don't say it anyway. It's just a word that I don't think belongs in anyones vocabulary.

Well if you don't want to say it, then just don't say it. What difference does it make if other people do it? Black people say it, white people say it, Asian people say it, etc. If you want to say it, then go ahead. If not, then don't.

It's not a matter of it being "okay". It's "okay" for ANYONE to say it, depending on what CONTEXT they are saying it in. But you start throwing that word at me in casual conversation, I'm not gonna be okay with it just because you're black.

At lest some people understand personal freedom around here. Like I said.

Yes, but its hypocritical for the word to be used feely by one race and then barred from another because of racial pride or history. It just expands the gap between races even farther; race shouldn't be used as an excuse to censor words.

No, no there isnt. There is 0 reason to hate white people as a whole, unless you're a racist. To hate white people as a whole would be to generalize and stereotype a race that encompasses hundreds of different cultures, histories, and ancestries, and hold them all responsible for the events of the past. So then, give me one good reason anyone can legitimately "dislike whites".

I have no idea why, I am not consciously guilty over slavery. But I think subconsciously all whites are, that's probably why we don't call on black people to be fired when they say "the n-word". The fact that we call it the "n-word" pretty much sums up how we have been conditioned to accept blacks saying the word, but getting the white guy fired just because he said something that was kind of, sort of, close to the "n-word". I think it sucks that we get called crackers and that's acceptable. I guess it's just the way of the world.

Indeed you shouldn't, but what many people fail to realize is that pointing out perceived double standards and idiosyncrasies creates more racial tension where none should exist. People should just be content with accepting the state of things, so they don't have to be at odds with other people, regardless of race. I think a lot of the racial conflict today isn't the result of racism, so much as stubbornness from members of multiple races.

It's called white guilt from that whole slavery thing.

Why should I feel guilty over something that I took no part it, did not start, and am completely against and form of...

I read alot so I have a good vocabulary but you completely lost me with that...

It's the same as a fat person calling another fat person fat. Does that bother you?

(First post.)

Back in the day, the use of the N Word in the "Urbanized Community" was a way for them to try and reclaim their roots and remind each other what their race had endured over the years. There was a certain amount of pride in knowing you belong to a race that has survived that sort of racism for so long without losing your cultural indentity. Just as we created the word and used it as a knife of some sorts to try and isolate them, wound them, cripple them, rape them of their culture and spirit, they have now taken possession of the word and used it for their own reasons, which is to try and create their own little niche and culture in society.

Of course, the irony here is that by creating their own niche in society via use of the word, they have done, and are still doing, exactly what they were supposed to be away from - Segregating themselves. People, especially being white, are not allowed to use the word without being accused of doing so because of ignorance on their part. To alot of people, even as I type this up here and now, if you aren't black, especially, again, if you're white, you can't even listen to Rap / Hip-Hop, or even dress in what would typically be called "black fashion" without being accused of trying to "invade" black culture, where, apparently, us "crackas" simply "don't belong."

In all honesty, I've used the word behind closed doors, but I would never do so to the face of another black person because of the stigma attached to it. Being southern, it also wouldn't do me any favors, as I would almost immeditely be labeled as a typical racist "from the South."
