I find it acceptable to use this word in the appropriate context. Unfortunately, everyone tries so hard these days to be politically correct, the media and other sources have tried to whitewash the definition of the N-word to apply exclusively to african-americans in a derogatory sense. It is highly suspicious that in recent years, alternate definitions of the word n***** have been omitted from most dictionaries. But it is much more than a racial slur. For example, the Oxford dictionary lists at least 6 definitions for the N-word.
On a personal note, I grew up in a very racist neighborhood in Filthadelphia but my mother did her best to teach me not to be racist. I was about ten years old the first time I heard the N-word. I didn't know what it meant so I looked it up in a dictionary. There were two definitions. 1 Someone who is lazy, ignorant or uneducated.(referring to a type of personality) 2 Slang term for a black person. Since then, I have always used te N-word to describe stupid and lazy people, regardless of ethnicity.
I also find it flagrantly offensive that there are no punishable hate crimes for racially offending a white person. It seems to be socially acceptable to call a white person a cracker, honkey or redneck, but call a black person a N* and they're ready to kill you or sue you. Not to mention, it is stupid and ignorant to use the word as a greeting or something amongst your fellow african-americans but to take it as an insult from persons of diverse ethnicity. That is racist.
One more thing, I'm tired of certain demographics of people raising their kids to be prejudiced against whites to "make up for 400 years of slavery". My brothers and I were victims of racism throughout our childhood and our ancestry had absolutely nothing to do with slavery. My grandparents came to this country when they were young adults.
