As someone who vividly remembers that day I found it hilarious. It's not even making fun of 9/11, it's making fun of crass marketing cashing in on events like this.

Torres Gemelas pretty much made all past and future attempts at 9-11 humor automatically invalid. What truly sets it apart is that he's actually serious about this topic and is trying to express legitimate pain and grief.
