I was thinking... why do so many candies come in a flat box? So you can conceal them. When I was a teenager I alway wore shirts with inside pockets and twill pants with the bilowed pockets on the thighs. I just stuffed my pockets with the candy. There was a dsicount store down the street from the theater.
[QUOTE="KrunkMastaX"]Movie theaters make the majority of their money from the concession sales. They do make money from ticket sales but it pales in comparison. The movie studios make the majority of that money. If not for concession sales the movie theaters would likely close down eventually. Things could have changed since I last worked at a movie theater which was in 2004 but I doubt it. I have worked at 2 movie theaters in my life. Both of them barely made money off tickets though the last one I worked at did not care if you brought food in. We had people who would bring in pizzas and we just turned a blind eye. What this guy said is the truth, the business is not on the ticket since the margin is almost nothing, but on the food. Still, I dont buy my candys in the cinema, but just because I dont like the stuff they sell there.Seriously. For as long as I've been going to the movies lately the prices have been astronomical. How is that this is allowed while the price of movie tickets continues to go up? Is a trip to the movies always suppsoed to leave a dent in your wallet? Or should it be an affordable good time. Im surprised theaters are allowed to do this and one complains about it at all.

[QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]I never buy anything when I go. If I want a snack I bring one in, don't even have to be sneaky about it because they don't care.KrunkMastaXLol this is true. Just blatantly walk past...I did alot and they didnt try to stop me at all.
That's how they make profit. The theatre keeps very little of the money earned through ticket sales.harashawnOhrly? yep learned that in my t.v. production class
Not really my problem though. If they have a business model that forces them to charge 500% more on an item than you can get it for somewhere else, that's a flaw on their end, not mine. The threaters break about even with the price of tickets. The food is where they make any profit

People will complain about the prices all they wish, but in the end, they will still buy the ticket, the popcorn, the soda even if it's at a ridiculous rate. If people will pay for it, they will continue to sell it at that price. Ring_of_fire
It's just like every market or entertainment form. If people are willing to spend the money, they will be more than happy to cut out a bigger profit. People buy crappy games = more crappy games. People pay $20 for a movie = going rate for a movie ticket. People buy crappy cars = more crappy cars.
The market does not function without people spending money in it. Stop complaining and do something about it. Don't go to the theater or if you do, don't spend $23.50 on a bag of M&M's.
Yeah cargo pants rock. I once smuggled in a 24oz beer can thanks to cargos. :lol:I was thinking... why do so many candies come in a flat box? So you can conceal them. I smuggle stuff in. All I'll buy is a big pop if they have cool cups. I have a scene club card though, so I get 10% off concession food, but it's still ridiculous. XilePrincessNot to mention telus tuesdays (you're a vancouverite right?)

Maybe it's just time for Theaters to go the way of Drive Ins and the dodo. They just aren't profitable anymore. Theater attendance in general has plummeted anyway. The threaters break about even with the price of tickets. The food is where they make any profit

The problem being is this.. They wouldn't be selling it for this much if people weren't willing to buy it.. Clearly they think they get much more profit charging this much then trying to sell it for cheaper.

Well yeah! If they sell a box of red ropes, it pays three employees salaries for the day! :lol:I agree with TC, but then again they do make a large portion of the profit that way. There is nothing we could do, people do buy.

that theory works well with other things such as expensive dlc costs, ppl are willing to buy it.I bring my own food like a ninja 8)
I laugh at you poor popcorn eaters while I dig into my lasagna.
u dont have to hide it lol, u can bring it in, as long as it doesnt look like ur gonna set up dinner in the theatre lol i think its fine :PNow that you mention the employees... I think that movie concession employees are the most unmotivated work force in the world. So, the problem is two-fold. Anywhere else that has a 2000% markup on items, you'd expect world-class service. Except at theaters, the opposite is true. You know that if there are two people in front of you in line, you will be there for at least 15 minutes.Well yeah! If they sell a box of red ropes, it pays three employees salaries for the day!

Also AMC took over Kerasotes recently. No more seven dollar movies for me :( o really, that sucks man, :| we shud be allowed to bring our own food, even airlines allow it, i dont get why they have to put us in a "buy-the-expensive-food" situation, and since im a rebelious person, i would bring in my own chicken wings/pasta/pizza/etc. somehow. im not paying top dollar for something i can get for dirt cheap down the street. While I agree with the thought that theatres make there money on concessions one has to ask how much is enough. If there model of business doesn't allow for them to stay in business without charging $25.00 dollars for two large drinks, some stale popcorn and a candy then they need to rethink how the business model works. Personally I would never ever buy the concessions at those rip off prices if it wasn't for my wife doing it happily. And yes every time I go to the movies and give up what seems like a lung, a kidney and part of my kids college fund my blood boils inside. The wife and I have debated over it in the past and to her is the "movie experiance" as to why she's willing to be price gouged so much.
Maybe it wouldn't seem quite so bad if the popcorn wasn't stale, the soda wasn't flat, the workers weren't rude, the movie didn't roll or go off center, the sound didn't crackle and the theatre didn't have a faint smell of mould.
Besides that, well.... I'm happy enough with going to the movies.
I get free unlimited popcorn and fountain drinks at the IMAX. It also bears mentioning that i get free tickets too. Yay me!
What do you mean 'how is this allowed'? It's called the free-market. A business offers a product at a certain price. If the price is too high, consumers won't buy the product. The business is free to charge whatever they want, and you're free to either buy it or, if you think the price is too high, not buy it. Heck, you're also free to build your own movie theater and charge your customers whatever you feel like charging them.Seriously.
