Hi. I was just wondering about what is up with Microsoft giving free anti virus after 7 was released. I have used it now for a while and it seems to work fine but is it a scam or what? Just asking because it seems weird for them to give out free stuff and there has been allot of controversy linked to ms lately

I just think its M$ using their monopoly tactics and I wont complain about it since its free and it works pretty good.

AV should have always been free in the first place.

Whether its free or paided AV should work regardless. It all comes down to how fast the companies can release their definitions in time before you get hit. Obviously Microsoft is giving away theirs for free because they know most Windows users use a freebies and since they are the target majority of the time you might as well release your own since they know the kernel inside and out.

Windows Defender is the best. It's free, it's made by Microsoft and doesn't bog your computer down.

Avast is the best I've ever used. I've been using it since early 2010 and haven't had a single infection and nothing has got past its detectors.

Avast is an excellent program. They offer both a free and paid version.

I use AVG, and I guess it's doing it's job. Never had an infection, and I never notice it running in the background.

They're free basic consumer AVs, the companies also sell enterprise versions and full suites. The free ones are fine for AV, paid versions are required for things like spam protection and anti-phishing.

I like MSE so far. AVG gave me several goods years but some bad updates (which were later rectified) made me switch from it to MSE.

I use AVG and have few complaints. It's easy to tell when it's running scans as it slows the computer down, so I schedule scans for when I'm not using the computer.

I think MS Security Essentials is free because they make you verify your windows before you can use it.
Or are you talking about another MS antivirus program?
