Just downgraded (or you can say Upgraded) to XP, Vista isn't a bad OS, just does not work with what I do, but i have to admit, Vista is a lil more organized and looks better, but i am liking my Service Pack 3

i've had vista for 7 months and i've had no major problems yet. i had freezing issues and problems that made me restart my computer a lot with xp but nothing like that with vista. if a problem does end unexpectedly, vista handles it much better than xp. no compatability issues either.

The only real issue I had with Vista was with my girlfriend's iPod - for the first six months iTunes was about as stable as an arthritic 90-year-old after downing half a dozen tylenol 3s. It would crash importing songs, it would crash randomly while updating the iPod, and it would crash randomly just playing music. Not innocent crashes, either, but big ugly blue screens of death only fixed by a hard restart.

Other than that, it's actually been more stable than my laptop running XP - I've only kept XP for compatability reasons, since a lot of older games just plain hate Vista, and I have an old printer that simply will not work in Vista, even with generic drivers.

Yeah, ME is many times worse than Vista and that's not even going back very far. The original Windows was pretty awful, too - I remember avoiding it whenever possible and running stuff in DOS because it wasn't much clunkier and had a huge speed advantage. Plus, games.

And System 7.1. Pretty much gave you a bomb every time you tried to click something - anyone who's 100% pro-Mac obviously never had the fun task of managing extensions to avoid conflicts and constant crashes.

I haven't had any problems with Vista myself either, I've been using it for over a year and it tends to be faster than XP, more stable and overall more pleasant to use. I've noticed it tends to be far better than XP at handling non-responsive programs, I'd usually have to wait ages for XP to close a non-responding program, whereas with Vista it's pretty quick and straightforward). Though I should note that the Vista I am running is 64 bit, whereas my copy of XP is 32 bit, so that may account for some of the improvement in speed. It's interesting that people use program compatibility problems to say that Vista's bad. If a program doesn't work on Vista, that doesn't mean that it's bad, it just means it's different. If a program is designed for XP then it most likely will work on Vista, but if it doesn't you shouldn't blame the OS - all it means is the two systems work differently. I suppose it's like this in a lot of fields, though. For example, a user might say web browser X is rubbish because it can't display a page properly, but browser y can, even though it may be because the webpage wasn't coded properly and browser Y supports completely different standards.

Why Vista can be made to do better than XP...

Once you have atleast 2GB RAM and a fast processor. Put vista on, then tweak the hell out of it.

Vista offers these better features:

  • Battery lasts much longer on laptops
  • Better memory usage. XP does not utilise RAM efficiently, instead it relies heavily on Virtual Memory (aka Page File)
  • Vista is much nicer looking

umm....yeaa

That's about it.

So did I convince you to go back to Vista with SP1?

Vista came with my laptop, so I set it up to dual boot XP.

Right now I only run XP, but if I ever need Vista I got it.

Also the big thing for me is software compatibility. I have some very expensive software that won't run on Vista, and I don't want to upgrade to the latest versions.

Vista made me vomit for weeks. XP gives me heartburn, but it's needed for some things. However, I never have stomach problems when I had DOS 4 dinner. However, DOSaronni grill is closing down pretty soon, so I may try that Ubuntu place around the block.

My graphics card is having compatibility errors with my vista causing it to lock up whilst gaming every 5 minutes which gets really annoying. I also cannot change my color from 16 to 32 bit without constant monitor problems occuring, my refresh rate also will not change. Many of my games do not work on vista which would work on XP, hell even Doom 3 isnt working. Direct X has been having many errors even after having clean delete and re-installs.

Lol you paid for a downgrade? Your probably going to end up regretting that when they stop support for XP. SP3 did little to nothing, and it was the last one XP was getting. The compatability issues people have with Vista are almost always solved with a quick google search, and the performance difference between XP and Vista is very negligible unless your computer is ancient or you forgot to turn of UAC.

The boot time is not much better, but it can be reduced to a matter of seconds with various tweaks which are relatively easy and can be found via Google.

Ubuntu is the way to go.

One thing I have always been wondering: How fast does Ubuntu boot up and shut down? That is one of the many things that drives me nuts about Windows, and especially Vista.

Just leave Windows in hibernate/sleep mode then, that's what I do.

Start ups do take a while, but it only takes 15 seconds for Vista (on my computer at least) to boot down.
