Feelings of boredom and sadness will always outnumber feelings of happiness and fulfillment. Not much you can do about that.

This used to be a subject I handled well, I used to comfort friends who got depressed over such thoughts, but all of a sudden the past month or two I myself can't get it out of my mind. I'm going to die. Not today, not tomorrow, not even soon (if luck serves me well), but at some point there's no question about it, I'm going to die, and that's starting to terrify me. It's like we fear doomsdays for we believe we may die, but somehow forget that we all have our own personal doomsday ahead and that one's a guaranteed event. The sheer thought of it alone is wrenching my gut right now. My life isn't perfect, not even close, but I don't want to loose it nonetheless and enter total nothingness. Thinking that no matter what I do that's exactly what's going to happen come a few decades is depressing me greatly lately. Any achievement I make would feel useless as I won't even be there to see the extent of my success if talking about leaving behind a legacy.

I'd love to believe in afterlife, I envy those who do, but the fact is that there's practically no undeniable evidence what so ever that one exists. As far as we're aware we just become nothing. I can't really think of it as peaceful because we would have no sense of peace, no thought, no feeling, nothing. We're just not there no more.

Does anyone have any thoughts or facts to share on this subject to possibly ease my mind?

The only part of death that scares me is the way in which I die. I want it to be quick and painless.

Also true. I have no issues with being dead, it's how I get there that concerns me the most.

You go to sleep every night right? During those hours you are shut down. You pretty much no longer exist while you are sleeping. Yeah your subconscious is still active but consciously you are turned off. Consider it practice for when the big day finally comes. SpinalTapTapTap

Actually I'm exteremly good at being aware that I'm sleeping. I remember about 80% of my dreams and in about half of them I'm aware that I'm dreaming, thus generally giving me lucid dreams on a regular basis. More than once I've felt myself slipping into dream too. My thoughts in my head start to become more vivid and eventually it's like I can watch them.

So I don't really feel dead when asleep, ever.

I have a different view on Life.

Well, since everything is made of stars and stars are energy as well as we are. (inside of us, that's why we live, right?)
Like in the stars.. the energy burns out... as well as our energy does.
But... The energy of these stars never vanish... it burns and transforms... (star > blackhole > supernova.. etc etc)
We does the same thing imo.

When you die your energy transforms into something different?
I dunno... but I try to think that even... If after death... we don't feel, we don't see, we just don't exist as a human...

We still Exist as an Energy.... rotation of an Energy in the vast space of galactic dust.

.....
I remember that guy on BBC knowledge said..
"Every atom in the universe... is empty inside. And since we are made of atoms... We Are Full of Emptyness"

He said that with a smile on his face...
And damm... it's true...

(srry for my grammar... I'm soo tired T_T)
*looks at time* 2:36... Goodnight! XD

Time is but a cruel and merciless mechanism from which only inevitable agony is created. You don't have forever, it's all about how bright you want your candle to burn in the time you do have.

Life is not something you can win at. All you can do is fight the unavoidable by loving, being loved and creating happiness for yourself and others in the best way you know how for as long as you have.

Why be afraid of something that's inevitable? The sooner you accept the fact you will die, the sooner you can start to fully appreciate the life you have. Talk to any past/present soldier--they'll tell you, roughly, the same thing. The fear of death is what makes people more ambitious and soldiers more effective in combat.

The way I look at it, Its an inevitability that we all die so I just make the best of what I can do and experience now.Is a scary thought for anyone regardless of how happy and content you are with your like. Your existence, your being, YOU, will be gone and its hard to imagine. We hate the unknown and that will never change.

If anything, I have fear of my friends & family going, which is why I try to make the best of things with them to the best of my personal ability.

Dwelling on myself going? No, it's pointless. Why fight what cannot be fought? Regardless of the hand you've been dealt, you make the best of it, and be at peace when the bell tolls. The longer you run from the thought of death, the less time you have actually enjoying yourself, & instead, you're putting yourself through self welcoming torture over a natural process. Another way of looking at it is that, that is exactly what can make life so special. So enjoy it.

Whats really scary is that time really does go faster as you get older. Its like this because Theory of Relativity research has revealed that sense of time is specific to an individual, and that as you get older, time literally goes faster in your mind.

At some point nothing will exist, and the heat death of the universe will have occured. The whole of existence will essentially consist of an empty blackness a minute fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

I only fear death because I believe in rebirth. And the reason that scares me is that the circumstances I was born into were purely luck based, nothing more. Relative to many in the world I was given a winning lottery ticket and for the most part am very blessed. I could've just as easily been born in a time and place of ultimate misery and suffering every day as many live. I think death will always frighten me due to this belief, though I do find some comfort in the fact that every single thing alive eventually dies. That it happens to all seems to marginalize it a bit.

Kind of odd but, when I think about death, I just think of how lucky I am to not be immortal. Can you imagine living forever? Unable to die? What do you do when the earth dies? At least when you die, you don't suffer such things which I think are much more harsh than finding death. Also, if there is an afterlife, even better.

I think about it too from time to time but I don' t get scared just sad. Knowing that my individual existence will one day just cease to exist and all my thoughts, memories and experiences will be lost forever. I can imagine myself very old (I hope I reach an old age rather than dying in a few years) lying on a bed with my wife, children and grandchildren all around me holding my hand when the hour comes. I will close my eyes and for those few seconds before I pass away I will think "it' s over". That really saddens me because I love life even it' s not perfect right now but still I want to continue living. And then I think of the afterlife (I' m religious) and the fact that we humans are special with all this contemplating of death proving it and I get the feeling that there may be more than absolute nothingness out there (that' s just me so don' t judge). And whatever happens I know that death is just another journey one we all take when the time comes and the best I can do is live my life as best as I can to be happy.

Slightly off but I found this;

NUMBER WHO HAVE EVER BEEN BORN 107,602,707,791

World population in mid-2011 6,987,000,000

Percent of those ever born who are living in 2011 6.5

So still a LOT of people.

http://www.prb.org/Articles/2002/HowManyPeopleHaveEverLivedonEarth.aspx

SO in 2011 roughly 107,602,707,791 had been born, ever.

Also because of the long and short scales you porbably have a different word for what I call trillion. For my country trillion is one million million. I think it's different for the US and UK.

You're giving context to nothing... If nothing follows life then it will indeed be nothing... Fearing nothing isn't fear at all... Therefore you believe in afterlife... If you're going to believe in afterlife you May as well Pascal...

You will never know that you no longer exist so such a concept is pointless to consider as relevant to your current life. That being said, How can you fear what came before any more then what comes after, It is the same thing as far as your experience is concerned. To fear death is to fear something that for all intent and purpose does not exist.

Yes but we won't be able to experience the joys of life anymore (the happy moments and life does have happy moments too) and that's sad and depressing.

Just be glad you got to experience it in the first place, especially as a human in a highly developed country. Pretty much hit the jack pot there.

Well all I can post is...

Not to scare you, or anyone at that, just found it interesting that I saw this thread, read TC's OP and thought of this song instantly.

But be glad you get to experience life, most people don't like to think it but everyone is here for a reason, even if you seem to be insignificant. Your presense here on this earth actually made a drastic change.

The global apocalypse of December 21 is less than 2 months away. :|

In my eyes if people say the world is going to end on a very specific date in a very specific future with next to no evidence, then It occurs, then something as seemingly obscene as an afterlife may also be correct.

The Universe has existed for 13.75 billion years before you and will do so after you die. Why worry about the after any more then you worry about the before?

True. And knowing that you will lose everything is what makes you truly appreciate life.

Does anyone have any thoughts or facts to share on this subject to possibly ease my mind?sune_Gem

You should just watch the last five minutes of Life of Brian.

It will cheer you up.

so long as i have kids, see them grow, get them going in the world. i can die happy then.

it's the closest thing to immortality for yourself, to see someone you helped create/gave birth to, loved and living in the knowledge they will live on long after you have gone.

that's about the only tangible consolidation i seem to be able to give myself.

like the late Christopher hitchens said, the party is still going, but you have to leave. now i don't persume to know if there is or isn't an afterlife - ie an even BETTER party in the other room. I just feel better if i have someone i love still at the party.

but nobody wants to leave the party.

Death is the only solace to the dull tedium of life. No more sorrow, no more pain, no more tedium.
