[QUOTE="821dan128"]

[QUOTE="jalexbrown"] I'm not necessarily referring specifically to you; I'm talking to all the people that say that Gamespot is too strict and whatnot. People get all up in arms about moderations and stuff, and they act like Gamespot is just being way too strict - but really, the rules aren't very hard to follow.jalexbrown

Well actually it shouldn't matter if they are under 13 years, as they probably lied by ticking the validity box saying there age is correct, so if they are younger it is there own fault (and bad parenting), just like how little kids get hold of GTA games and CoD. This site IS too strict.

Gamespot is ran by a large corporation - not some small group of random cyber-bullies that are trying to be mean to people. I am not shy about insisting that people that don't like the rules or how they're enforced should probably go elsewhere, because it's not going to change.

Three words: Freedom of Speech. We shouldn't have to cater for underage children just because they lied about their age, that is their problem or be accused of trolling when we're expressing our opinions on a forum.. which is what forums are for aren't they? Nevermind it will change when i become a mod.

[QUOTE="jalexbrown"][QUOTE="gamebreakerz__"] It shouldn't be against the rules, should I say something like 'your argument is illogical'. If some douchebag says something stupid like the thing in my sig them I'm going to tell him the truth.gamebreakerz__

There are plenty of ways to tell people they're wrong and still be civil about it. In the case of what's in your sig, I agree that it's a completely invalid statement - but I wouldn't react by insulting them, because all that does is derail things.

No, it makes the idiot shut up.

Nine times out of ten the person that you insult will come back, and in the end it will just derail the thread. If I had that little mod emblem under my avatar, this thread would already be locked for being derailed - but that's not the point. If you insult somebody, odds are in favor of the fact that it will ultimately derail the thread.

Kids shouldn't even be on the net in the first place, if they don't see it here they're exposed to p0#! sites or what not anyway. So GS fails.

Actually nothing at all would change if you became a mod, and you'll never be a mod if you expect to step in and change the rules. And the rules aren't designed to cater to anyone that might have lied about their age; they're designed for the community at large - which includes 13+ people that might be offended. Oh, and you can't just fall back on freedom of speech, because you agreed to the terms and conditions when you joined the site. When you agreed, you effectively forfeited your rights to total freedom of speech on Gamespot.

I've gotten modded for the most obscene things, like a 3 day ban for calling someone an idiot, surely he wasn't offended and he was an idiot.

Yeah I agree here. I can see some of the cursing, but this whole insult thing is just silly.

Not all rules are meant to be enforced. Like double posting/derailing threads/1 word post. If you mod these people at every single offence then we'd all be banned by now... Not saying jalexbrown would do that(he seems like a more laid back guy than that) I'm just following gamebreakerz__ 's logic.

That always happens in OT I've never seen a thread get locked for derailing unless insults and offensive content starts popping up.

Yeah. but they are basically locking it to avoid unnecessary mods. I've taken part if some 10-15 pages of pure derailment threads. There were even mods adding to the argument. Sometimes a more interesting discussion come sup(like this one). However, to be fair the other topic wasn't far from the initial discussion.

OMFG THIS THREAD HAS GONE OFF TOPIC IN THE OFF TOPIC FORUM!!! LOCK IT

It's not just about a thread going off topic; it's about the direction in which a thread goes off topic. This thread contains absolutely no useful discussion anymore. This thread has no reason to keep going. For every post about what someone does in the morning, there are probably five or six about people complaining about the rules or how they're enforced. There is a thread to which you can go if you have a problem with the rules, and it's called Ask the Mods. That's where these issues should be taken - not into some random thread in OT.

Half the threads in OT have no useful discussion, it's just pointless discussion, whats wrong with that. If we are having a conversation, why would you come in and ruin that?

I'm not going to bother explaining why derailing a topic is bad for discussion, because I know one of the mods are around now - so this thread will be locked in no time at all anyways. If Travo wants to explain, I'll let him explain why threads shouldn't be derailed.

Exactly, there are no kiddies going into established threads and trolling through all the posts, its just the people in that discussion so they should never be locked.

OMG seriously, why do you care, if you don't want to participate in a derailed thread then go away but how is it harmfull?? What is the point of OT?? To have a fun and often pointless discussions with other people, not to stick strictly to the thread topic and stop any discussions that aren't perfectly on topic. Grow up.

[QUOTE="jalexbrown"][QUOTE="gamebreakerz__"] Please tell me what is wrong with some people having a casual chat? Just because it is pointless doesn't mean a mod should come in and ruin it.

gamebreakerz__

I'm not going to bother explaining why derailing a topic is bad for discussion, because I know one of the mods are around now - so this thread will be locked in no time at all anyways. If Travo wants to explain, I'll let him explain why threads shouldn't be derailed.

OMG seriously, why do you care, if you don't want to participate in a derailed thread then go away but how is it harmfull?? What is the point of OT?? To have a fun and often pointless discussions with other people, not to stick strictly to the thread topic and stop any discussions that aren't perfectly on topic. Grow up.

*Sigh* I wish you would read what I'm posting. Pages upon pages of people complaining about the rules or how they're enforced isn't productive conversation. Derailing a thread for a similar but more interesting topic is fine. Derailing a thread for a completely unrelated topic is just unnecessary; that's why there's the little New Thread button at the top of the forum. Derailing a thread to gripe about the policies of Gamespot...that's why there's Ask the Mods.

To back your point up look at the people above who keep posting to try and keep it on topic.

What would asking the mods achieve? Nothing if you were one. Who are you to decide what topic is interesting? We're not talking about ninja turtles or whatever else you like but I find this discussion interesting, or is my opinion invalid? Seriously, we can have a discussion about the topic you find uninteresting, does that cause any harm to GS? No so leave if you want to but threads shouldn't be closed because of the topic being discussed (as long as it's not really inappropriote).

If that's how you feel then fine, whatever - but that doesn't change the fact that there are rules to follow. Rather or not this is interesting isn't the point; it's the fact that it's totally unrelated to what was asked. If you want, make a new thread complaining about the rules and see how long it lasts before the mods shut it down, but don't derail a thread so you can gripe about the rules.

This thread has gone way off topic and turned into another thread where everyone argues, so now it's closed.
