The French? Seriously? Why? And why so high? Call me ignorant but I've had no idea they had a big army in between 1790 and 1940. Infact, didn't they have pretty much no army after WW1? The only thing I remember they deserve credit for is the French chivalry in the medieval times.
wouldnt all modern armies own all those ancient armies with our big guns and nuclear weapons?south411
when you see the words "of all time" you need to factor in other circumstances. For example, what did they accomplish? Now I dont doubt that many modern armies could defeat an older one, but you cant count because...what did they accomplish?
The Roman Army would get slaughtered by a modern army, but the Roman Army helped conquer like half the known world at one point.
The Russian Army from WWII to 1989 would get spanked by the US army today, but when you factor in all the conflict, specifically on the eastern front, and how they essentially defeated Germany its quite amazing.
I think that is a very good list. But you forgot SPAAAAAAARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and the 300!

Ah, right. I completely forgot about that era. But still, number 3 just for that? It's nothing compared to what some of the countries/factions below them accomplished.

Yes, according to 300. The movie which has elephants and rhinos at the battle of Thermopylae and has the Spartans fighting half naked.
How about the Army of Alexander the Great? He conquered most of the known world in about 10 years.deshields538
Yeah, and Alexander the Great was undefeated in battle, even against forces several times the size of his own.
Fill in the rest...Cus I don't care.
British Army > All

ClawKiller
Maybe, too bad American soldiers are too busy torturing detainees and throwing puppies off cliffs.
Ok for all the people saying britain should be first - its a list of land armies. If it was an Empire list or a naval list, then yes britain would be first or second. But in terms of Britains army - IT WAS TINY. Ok fair enough, redcoats where some of the most feared infantry across world, but they never conquered a territory to warrant them above France, Mongol or Rome.
Alexander the great was a person, not an army. he fought for many different countries. This list is for single, professional armies.
For the people who are doubting the French - they conquerd western Europe and during WW1, and just before WW2 they had the largest military force in the world.

Yes ok il call you ignorant. The French army along with the British pretty much invented the way modern armies work today.

well then no one should listen to what you think.
He said if the british were as numerous. obviously at the number they are today they couldnt they havnt got enough manpower, but if we were as numerous we would be in an equal fight, we share the same technology we either work together on it or trade it.
so all in all dont speak unless you know what you are talking about because from what i just read you either have no knowledge or just cant read

If the British army really pushed, it could probably match the American numbers. But because of many government defence reviews it has been reduced to a global police force.

Yeah, if we wan't to turn into another North Korea. The US is a larger country, and will always have a larger army than any single European nation.

The US army today is just over 1 million. The size of the British army during WW2 was well over 3 million - and that was with a smaller population. Today if they needed it, Uk could probably recruit about 6 - 7 million healthy men.
