Playing video games we see a lot of people lose their lives. From Sonic stepping on a barb without a ring to getting headshot in modern warfare. Whats form of capital punishment do you think is the absolute worst? Is it being drawn and quartered? How about being nailed to two by fours? Burnt at the stake? I personally think being drenched in honey and having ants poured on top would the be my least favorite.

Worst? Probably hanging. Especially if the noose wasn't in the correct spot and you suffocated to death.

I would be happy if they brought back the firing squad. Maybe used robots instead. Would save us from having to buy the lethal injection cocktails.

I would imagine being burned at the stake would be horrifically painful. Not sure if any countries still do that though.

how do you normally die from being hung? Blood supply being cut off to the brain?

Was that considered capital punishment, though? I always thought capital punishment referred to court ordered death sentences.

I believe that it was ordered a couple of times in colonial US, and often used by the church in medieval Europe. Though, I don't know that any state does it anymore.

I know that it happened in both the US and Europe, I'm just wondering if it was actual capital punishment or if it was more of a Church thing.

Historically, sometimes both simultaneously.

I wonder how "painless" those lethal injections are...

As for brutal punishments... Starving someone was never used after what I've learned, but it surely sounds horrible. Others... I don't... Hanged perhaps-

Sawing sounds quite painful.

"In Execution by sawing, the criminal would be hung upside-down and a large saw would be used to cut their body in half, starting with the groin, all the way to the head. Because the person was hanging upside-down, the brain received sufficient blood to keep them alive until the saw finally reached the main blood vessels in the abdomen."

- Drawn and quartered - "Convicts were fastened to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and drawn by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated, disembowelled, beheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces)." - Brazen bull - "The condemned were locked in the bull, and a fire was set under it, heating the metal until it became yellow-hot and causing the person inside to roast to death. The head of the ox was designed with a complex system of tubes and stops so that the prisoner's screams were converted into sounds like the bellowing of an infuriated bull." - Immurement - "Immurement is a form of execution where a person is walled up within a building and left to die from starvation or dehydration. This is distinct from being buried alive, in which the victim typically dies of asphyxiation."

Tho there was one in china where someone would be cut in half at the waist while tied to like a pole and just left there to die.

I'd take a firing sqaud or hanging any day over those two

Being burned alive is absolutely one of the worst if not the worst. The pain is more excruciating than pretty much any of those. Hanging is mostly quick as your neck breaks. Getting shot, if in the head, is instantaneous and if in the body a few times is pretty quick. Bitten by ants would be pretty crazy as would being slowly crushed in a vice. I'm still going with burned alive at the stake. . . . 'I can't take the heat. Get me out of the stake... I mean kitchen.'

The Iron Maiden was another fun one...

The Iron Maiden It's an upright sarcophagus with spikes on the inner surfaces. Double doors open on the front, allowing entrance for the victim. In one example, eight spikes protruded from one door, 13 from the other. Once the victim was inside, the doors were closed. There, the strategically placed spikes would pierce several vital organs. However, they were relatively short spikes, so the wounds wouldn't be instantly fatal. Instead, the victim would linger and bleed to death over several hours. To add to the abject horror of it all, two spikes were positioned specifically to penetrate the eyes.

The Inquisitional Chair: http://www.listaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/inquisitionchair.jpg

Although intended as a torture device, this was usually used (like a lot of torture devices) to slowly kill the person by heating the spikes so that they would roast to death.

Revolving Drum: http://www.listaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/revolvingdrum.jpg

Like a cheese grater that slowly disembowels a human torso. The nicer torturers didn't put weights on the person. Any sign of resistance and the drum would be turned one full revolution.

Boats (#9): http://www.smashinglists.com/10-most-torturous-methods-of-execution/

Scaphism, also known as the boats was an ancient Persian method of execution designed to inflict torturous death. The naked person was firmly fastened within a back-to-back pair of narrow rowing boats (or a hollowed-out tree trunk), with the head, hands, and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing severe diarrhea, and more honey would be rubbed on his body in order to attract insects to the exposed appendages. He or she would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenseless individual's feces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects, which would eat and breed within his or her exposed and increasingly gangrenous flesh. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that dehydration or starvation did not provide him or her with the release of death. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days. Death by scaphism was painful, humiliating, and protracted.10 Most Torturous Methods of Execution on Smashing Lists

Crucifixion in Islam is the capital punishment for banditry. It used to be done in the past but nowadays it's just a simple shot to the head, or like in SA, decapitation.
