You just choose where to focus your worshipping nature on.

Given all the talk that goes around here about atheism I leave you with this quote for you to discuss from one of the greatest american minds from recent times David Foster Wallace. Too bad nobody knew about him while he was still alive...

"Because here's something else that's weird but true: in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship -- be it JC or Allah, bet it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles -- is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It's the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It's been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness."

― David Foster Wallace

That makes no sense. They're not atheist, because they believe something else besides the concept of god?

Nah. Being atheist just means you don't believe in a god.

Because they worship something else, not just because they believe in that. The concept of theism and religion is basically based on the practice of worshipping which is basically believing something is so good and noble and that it holds the truth about the universe and/or life. Many of the people who claim not to believe in or worship any god end up putting all their worship and faith on things like money or science for example which basically is not really that different from worshiping other things.

It makes sense if you have capacity to analyze a term or a concept beyond its dictionary definition. That's what critical thinking is all about.

Atheism is the belief that there are no gods. It doesn't mean you still can't be religious/spiritual (see: Buddhism). Also, even for people who aren't religious at all, that doesn't mean that they worship sex and money instead. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard and it sounds like the thoughts of an imbecile who is so narrow minded that he can't even comprehend the idea of a life without religion.

When you say a word, it's expected that you use it according to its definition. Otherwise, you make no sense.

Being an atheist doesnt mean you dont worship anything (with the meaning of the word that guy in the OP uses the word "worship").

So yes atheists do exist and no wanna-be philosopher that likes to play semantics and abuse definitions can prove otherwise.

The definition you quoted assumes atheists "believe" in something, rather than just reject a belief in a God. That is bad philosophy.

Well if we all analyse and think beyond "mere definitions" about many other things then we can make the weirdest claims.

Your stance is a paraphrase of "if we ignore what things/ideas actually are then we can say what we want about them". Well no ****...

Can it be possible that people here are so incapable of reasoning to this level? Well maybe it is, this is GS after all. Everyone takes everything literally, no wonder people complain about education these days. I expect people here can't even begin to comprehend basic figures of speech like metaphors and similes since words don't carry their literal meanings... sigh

Worship is defined as religious devotion. Sure, Atheist have devotions, but they aren't religious ones. This David Foster Wallace isn't using the word "worship" in its traditional sense. Just like Einstein or Steven Hawking don't use the word "God" in the traditional sense.

I doubt David Foster Wallace concluded from what he said that atheists dont actually exist.

I'd be ashamed if I were him, that people take me out of context to support insane ideas and using me as a credential for their own opinions.

He was not using atheism in its literal dictionary sense, that's the whole point. He's trying to make YOU think outside the worship a god not worship a god debate and focus on a more general and basic phenomenon that underlies our believes in gods which is a natural predisposition to worship and/or explain the world around us and which is part of the human nature even waaaaaayyyyy before words like "atheism" and "theism" were invented. But I guess it went over everyone's head here. Too "complicated" perhaps.

Probably attempting to bridge the gap between theists and atheists and do away with the differences we think we have.

But that's just a quick conclusion. Maybe there's more or something entirely different to it.

Sometimes people use different words in place of others because it better conveys an idea they're trying to get across. Take for example the use of the Word "God" by some scientist like I mentioned earlier in my post.
