Making movies from board games isn't new, they did it back in the '80s with Clue, which...wasn't that bad.

It's about branding

Sometimes Hollywood has a few completed scripts laying around; So to get some of them into production, they need an easily recognizable brand to attach to the script so they can market it to audiences.

I would think it's impossible to have a "fresh" idea. As long as the movie executes the plot well like Christopher Nolan's Batman series or X-Men: First Class, I won't care as much.

In fact, when you think about it, all ideas are recycled or taken from another source so it's not fresh. But it's how well you execute the idea.

That reminds me, have you seen Escape from City 17?

And before you ask, according to Wikipedia, they're working on a top secret project that is taking most of the producer's time... So yeah.

There are good ideas and bad ideas. Just look at anything done by Charlie Kaufman. It is all brilliant and original. (see Synecdoche, New York , Adaptation, Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine)

Movies cost so much to make these days that they need to know for sure that what they're making will return some profit. So they stick to what people already know (brands, series, directors and actors).

And to think there was someone insulting older movies the other day, goes to show you that the current movies are way worse than older ones 8)

Tim Curry was good in that one, and the cast is made up of primarily comedic actors. There's worse ways to kill 90 minutes. Worth a look.
