This article talks about how today's generation of teenagers are the so-called "dumbest generation" simply because of their activities involving technology. It mentions things like messaging, YouTube videos, and the like.

In my opinion, it's bull crap. Just because we're not in our rooms studying 5 hours a day doesn't make us dumb. And it's not just teens that use this technology. There's adults on YouTube and Facebook and the like. I see no point in social networking sites or having an account on YouTube. However, there are people that do. And there's nothing wrong with that. Just because today's teens like using this technology, it doesn't make them "dumb". Give me a break.

Also, I like the first comment.

What are your thoughts?

You'll get it when you're older. Once you're out of high school for a while, you start to get how stupid most kids are. :P

Dumbest? We are utilizing our technologies to better ourselves and make our lives more easy and productive. I guarentee our generation's minds move faster than the previous ones. We can multitask so much better.

Seeing as how this generation invented Youtube/Facebook using them sort of makes his point fall flat.

Don't worry; you'll see it when you're older, kinda how you now understand all the ridiculous crap you did when you were little.

If we're so dumb, might as well burn down every school. I mean, it wont make a difference.

Regardless of whether or not it is more efficient than single-tasking(?) being able to multitask better would indicate improved cognitive capabilities.

Every generation will carry with it some kind of connotation with it passed on down from the previous generations and those that will proceed it. Each generation has progressed differently in terms of technology, values, and the accpetable social behaviors. The "dumb" thing to do is to label one generation as such simply because they differ from one another.

Yeah, but can you light a fire with your shoe laces?

Our generation picks up technological stuff quick and easily, but older people know how to actually do physical stuff.

If you see kids these days try to do something like fix a bike, it's pathetic.

Edit: (Generally speaking).

I'm sure you could also find plenty of studies showing that educational goals have been pushed forward dramatically over the years.

It wasn't that long ago that children only started learning to read at the age of about 5 or 6! That's inconceivable nowadays, when many children start reading in infancy.

And just a couple of decades ago you had to go to college to receive tuition in linear algebra and calculus, but now those topics are introduced in most high school math syllabuses.

That article's wrong, the average IQ raises by three percent every decade... It's this interactive, complex technology that's challenging us and forcing us to grow smarter.

And maybe we would not be considered the dumbest generation if the American government would stop wasting damn money on health care and more on education.

Yeah, because none of us comb the internet looking for stuff to read and learn. Maybe I'm the only one that does that... But you get the point. If anything, we are so much smarter, because we have access to all this information without having to wait to be taught it in school (for instance, I could go and look up a paper on nuclear physics right now and learn more then they teach us in school). Point is, I spend a ton of time with electronics, but I'm faaaaaaar smarter than most adults were when they were my age.

Kids have always been stupid. It's just that once you become an adult, you realize this. The problem with adults is that they forget they weren't always adults, and that they haven't always perceived everything as an adult.

Here is the comment that I posted on that article earlier this month.

Sure, why not. I'm an idiot. I'm not more informed that I ever could have been before the internet because of the wealth of news and information. I never use the internet to look up science related material to help me with my homework. I'm not able to use a mass text to quickly get an important message out to a large number of people.

You're right all I do all day is watch stupid youtube videos and text my friends about the latest celebrity bull crap.

...

I swear old people are always out to get teenagers. It's always one stupid thing or another. It used to be music, then video games, and now phones and the internet.

The truth is that teenagers are more informed about the world than they ever were before now. In the past all people had was a single view from the newspaper and one other view from television news. Now with the internet they can see every side of a story to help them come to an informed decision.

Teenagers also have more access to scholarly material than ever. You talk about the Gettysburg Address. Be honest, how many teenagers ever cared about the Gettysburg Address, not many. BUT the ones that do care about it can learn more about it than they ever could have before now. People used to have to dig through books upon books at a library to get a few essays on it. Now they have access to the largest information base that has ever existed to find many relivant articles on the Gettysburg Address.

Another thing. Kids still get a lot of face to face social interaction. They still hang out at lunch and after cl@ss The only difference is that they keep interacting with each other after they go home.

People always seem to take the extremes as the norm. I guess it is because it makes things more exciting.

Maybe I am wrong, because, as you know, I am an idiot from the dumbest generation.

Not the most coherent thing in the world because I was in a hurry when writing it.

The ways of a child are foolish.

And usually, children shouldn't worry about such things. They should be out and about enjoying their childhood and learning little by little about the world around them. Not worrying about politics and astrophysics.

I think that every generation of teens is stupid, but we all eventually grow up. Give this generation ten more years and then articles like that will be interesting and/or valid.

Ok I misread you're statement. Well my point is America went from one of the most educated countries in the world to one of the most dumb countries because America 1. Doesnt pay teachers enough/ not enough money in education. 2. Half of the teachers dont care about there students lives/goals. 3. They dont supply us with the necessities to have a successful life.

You are presenting a false dichotomy. Education and healthcare are not enterchangable. There are countries that have better education systems and better healthcare systems then the US.

Well with guardians (guardians=parents for this statement) getting divorces like its a new style it makes it hard for teenagers to see anything positive in there future as they have now just witnessed one of the most important things in life (family) fail.

I see. But then again, the guardian should contribute to their child's education as well.

Agreed. You know the old saying "it takes a village to raise a child." Such a responsibility should not be placed solely upon the teachers. And @ insaneshane26: The same argument could be made for any other country in the world. There are teachers, professors, instructors, and the like all over the world that may feel the wages paid to them are unfair. And maybe not just the teachers don't care, but the students themselves may have no interest and the other peers and "role models" in their lives have no interest. This is not to say for every individual, but there are those who are less fortunate or have circumstances that have led them to simply not care. As for the necessities to live successfully; life is what you make it. One has to supply themselves with the proper arsenal to tackle life's challenges. Sure, a helping hand is always welcomed but what can be learned from constant free hand-outs?
