http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/

Drought expands to cover nearly 63% of the Lower 48; wildfires consume 2 million acres

The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during July was 77.6°F, 3.3°F above the 20th century average, marking the hottest July and the hottest month on record for the nation. The previous warmest July for the nation was July 1936 when the average U.S. temperature was 77.4°F. The warm July temperatures contributed to a record-warm first seven months of the year and the warmest 12-month period the nation has experienced since recordkeeping began in 1895.

I'm sure anyone who works outside really felt the heat this july. It was f*cking misserable. I just hope that this isn't the new normal.

Same. July here was early fall. I didn't think we were even getting a summer this year until this week.

Does an average of 77* seem really low to anyone else for July? I would think the average July temp in the US would be around 85-90. There must be some really cold states even in summer.

I think they were counting total average temperature, not just daily high temperatures.

It's been really rainy here lately. That's kept the temp down, thankfully. But early last month I was working on an extension of my grandma's car port roof with my uncle. I hadn't sweat that much in a long time.

Feels good to live in silicon valley, where almost no one has air conditioning. Today we are expected to get to a high of 90 degrees, I might put on shorts.

Not really

With how much of the country has been in the 90s to low 100s most of July, think of how many states would have to be significantly lower than the average of 77 to get there...

The highs are in the 90s and 100s but the temp doesn't stay their all day, temperature ranges throughout the day are factored in. (even in louisiana it would get down to 80 or so at night)

AC says 86 outside. It's worse at the apartment that I am since the's no shade where all the windows are. The sun is hitting us the entire day. So it tends to be 10-20 degrees cooler outside than inside while the sun is up.

It got up to 87 here in the Puget Sound area on Sunday. It did kinda suck since not many apartments have AC here, and my apartment faces west. Got up to around 93 in my room, so that kinda blew. This past weekend was kind of a fluke though, since it usually hovers around the low 70s. Rather pleasant.

I've never seen so many temps in the 90s in eastern WI, where we are usually protected by the lake breeze. Climate change FTW.

86 is hot? 86 is considered nice here in the summer. We spent most of July with heat indexes of 110+. I bet most of you have no idea what hot really is.

Growing up in Canada, you always hear about the jokes Americans make and the assumptions some make that Canada is a frozen wasteland, it always snows, or it's constantly -20 even in the summer. It was kinda the reverse for me thinking about America, you always have so many tornados and floods and droughts i assumed the place was craaaazy hot, even a lot of the media shows America gets really hot but then i see most of Texas avgs at like 90F which isn't even that bad. I live in Northern Alberta and last winter we had temperatures of -45F and this summer we had a high of 101F in July, When i went to Toronto last month it was hovering 100+ every day except it was suuuper humid so it felt like 115+

Fahrenheit is more sensitive. You only have 100 degrees between freezing and boiling on a Celcius scale, but you have 212 degrees between those two points on the Fahrenheit scale.

Freezing is 32F, which is 0C. Not-freezing is 33F, which is also 0C.

Yes, I know you can use decimal places with C, but weather casts don't so it's a moot point.
