Does an average of 77* seem really low to anyone else for July? I would think the average July temp in the US would be around 85-90. There must be some really cold states even in summer.

It's not the average HIGH temp, it's the average 24/7 temperature for July in the USA.
It was, on average, 77 Degrees in the USA, all the time, in July.
33/48 states had "Much Above Normal". The west coast, of course got off the hook with normal or slightly below normal temperatures. However, that region only makes up like 10% of the landmass of the lower 48, so it didn't have much of an effect on the rankings since everyone else baked.
It was pretty brutal. This winter is going to suck. I can feel it.

If this winter was like last winter, you're probably going to love it, especially if you live in the northern US. Most areas had well below their average snowfall totals last winter.
