[QUOTE="XturnalS"]Well, it's STILL sunday, you can't count today until it's done. Besides, These are the estimated totals; the official totals (including Sunday, I believe) won't be out until tomorrow.Great to see D9 got the $$$ it deserves.
What I don't is why sunday doesn't count? I always thought that weekend box office results meant the weekend.
Hallenbeck77
Sunday is the first day in the week, not monday. Saturday is the last day of the week.

The way the studios do it, they add the estimated totals from Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. You can still go. If you're UNDER 17 need to have someone older to go with you.NOOOOOOO District9 is rated R  I'm only 17.... MUST FIND WAY TO WATCH.

I'm 17, I watched it. In Canada, anyway. It doesn't matter. Just go in.NOOOOOOO District9 is rated R  I'm only 17.... MUST FIND WAY TO WATCH.

Dude, the trailer is NOTHING like the movie. NOTHING, I say.District 9 looked like nothing special in the trailer, these good reviews and all this positive feedback have caught me unawares and given me a desire to actually see the film now. I await the Uk release of said picture.

Tell your parents that its a very smart scifi movie that talks about racism, intolerance, greed and other heady themes. Just leave out any talk of pig cannons, extreme use of the "f-bomb" and exploding humans.

The trailer IS nothing, I don't get how people can judge it on that... I mean, literally, the trailer is almost nothing. The marketing campaign for this movie was freaking brilliant, not telling people a damn thing about this movie made it so much more enjoyable. For once in a movie, I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next (even in the very beginning).

No but from a trailer you can make an informed decision as to how much the film interests you, the consumer.
At least it killed off GI Joe. And it only goes to show you don't need an overblown budget to make a decent movie. However decent is as far as I'm willing to go with that movie. I don't care to see it again and its something as sure as hell wouldn't buy on dvd.

I think that was a calculated risk from Jackson and Blomkamp who had final say on the cut of the trailer. Either keep the details of the story that has the potential to backfire if there's little interest garnered from revealing more than what they did in the trailers. By keeping the trailer vague in what the story really was then you also get a similar reaciton in that people may not get what the movie will be about. I think what finally sold the film before its release was the reaction from this past Comic-Con. It wasn't just the geek and genre critics who saw the screening who raved about it but mainstream critics who were at The Con as well.

Well, I honestly don't care about consumers who rely soley on trailers to decide what movies to watch... they can go watch Transformers 2.

Uhuh, I often use trailers to gauge my interest.
More often than not, I also follow directors, but that is besides the point when it comes to an unknown, eg, District 9.
That's great news!
Hope they get enough money to juice out that sequal.
WiiMan21
I don't think finding money for any potential sequel would be a problem. Even if Peter Jackson has to finance the whole thing himself again. The Hobbit-man is not hurting for money.

Yeah but the more money the better.
and there will be a sequal.

Well, as this film has answered beautifully, less money doesn't mean a film will suck. And as many members' reactions here point out, Bay had tons of money to use and his stuff still sucked. I say give Blomkamp just slightly more to keep him from worrying about how his film will make the money back.
Decent film, light on the ideas, heavy on the action, some of the most interesting parts of the premise were only barely touched upon, in favor of huge gunfights. Also anyone with half a brain can spot the gaping plot holes and unsatisfying explantions for nearly everything alien.
LOLDistrict 9 was quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. Terrible acting. Unlikeable main character. EXTREMELY shallow and PREDICTABLE plot. Instead of caring about any depth in story, just 'shoot 'em up at the end. Stupid and horribly scripted. If anyone wants to see real science fiction, watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, now that's a movie for the century. I can't believe people think District 9 is one of the best science fiction movies of the decade. So bad.

District 9 already made 37 million? Damn it already went over it's budget. Good for Neil and Copley!
[QUOTE="Nerd_Man"][QUOTE="Hallenbeck77"] Thanks. I just wish I could've seen any of this summer's movies. This is the first summer in a long time where I missed out on a lot. Hallenbeck77Why so? Between managing the video store where I work at full time, and saving the extra money I had for college, (I have the GI bill, but the money hasn't kicked in yet) I needed to stretch what loot I had. But on the plus side, I get all my rentals free, and I get to take home the new releases before the release dates.
You didn't miss much. District 9 is a great film, but everything else has been pretty average.
District 9 was/is a damn good flick. I love the whole documentary feel. You can definitly see the parallels to Apatheid. (For those who dont know Aparthied was South African segregation.)
You can also see the similar filming styles that were in Halo Arms Race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUcreY0X33k)
For those who dont know the director (Niel Blomkamp) of District 9 also directed Halo Arms Race
