Another weekend where the #1 film is a surprise to no one. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has taken the top spot with an estimated $56 million. As far as wiether or not it's any good, I'll leave it up to you. As far as the other new openings, Julie & Julia has taken in the date movie crowd and the #2 slot with a respectable 20 mil. A Perfect Getaway didn't fare as well; opening at #7 and a only making $5.7 mil.
And on that note, this also brings the summer movie season to an UNOFFICIAL close. Technically, it doesn't end until labor day weekend, but looking at the release schedule between now and then, there doesn't seem to be another movie with the ability to do record-breaking numbers. Solid business, yes... but don't expect $100 mil openings anytime soon.
Next week offers up the sci-fi movie District 9, Hayao Miyazaki latest animated feature Ponyo opens stateside, Band Slam will make it's debut, Eric Bana stars in The Time Traveler's Wife, and Jeremy Piven stars in The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. (Why not leave the title to simply The Goods?)
