So... did these students know self-defense or just get very lucky?

Regardless, as would-be muggers they got what they deserved.

Should've killed them. If I was competent enough to disarm and beat the piss out of two armed guys, I'd just finish the job and end their worthless lives. I'd feel no remorse, and would've done the world a service.Rhazakna

What you described though wasn't self-defense, it was murder. I don't disagree that if someone is an active threat to your life, then you can kill them. But if they cease to be an active threat, you should not kill them.
